I dont know if swapability is a word or not, but will a wiper switch for intermittent wipers work in a truck without them ? The reason I ask is, I ordered a new wiper switch for my 76 Highboy WITHOUT wiper delay, and the switch I got is the one WITH delay, it has the squareish (I dont know if thats a word either) bottom and the ground cable and u can turn it counterclockwise for the delay. If I can put this switch in and it will make my regualar wipers intermittent then I will keep the switch, if not then I will take it back and get the cheaper one that I need. Thanks.
Alright thanks, I think I will just take it back and get the right one. I ordered a 76 switch. The one I got was about $50, the one I need is about $25.
Just an idea, I pulled an intermittent switch and box out of an 80's Bronco. Got it for $3 from the junkyard. The only thing different in my wiring was that it only has 1 output for the washer whereas I believe the old switch had power in and out for the washer. So it's 1 wire you have to connect for that and all the rest just plugged right in.
At least you can get a switch. I called ten parts houses and three dealerships after going to about six wreckers for my 73. There isn't one to be found in any year at the wreckers (assuming they "keep anything that old" ). The parts houses can't even order it (can't find the part number in the puter or book and I think they all use the same warehouse ) and the dealership says they might be able to get one in a week or two . Here in Oregon not having wipers in November is NOT an option. So they now work on low speed without park via toggle switch. I have to quit procrastinating (sp?) and ask the dealership to hunt one down.
The Napa in Snohomish (We go there cuz my dad gets a discount through his work) had to order my switch from Florida, thats the closest one they found. My wipers work now, but I have to wiggle the switch alot and they dont go down when you shut them off, also when I push the botton they move instead of the washers spraying.
Here you funny bunnys. Check these ebay auctions: 7935437220, 7936666202, 7936668654. If you have any yards where you pull your own parts that would be ideal to find them for cheap.
At the time I was actively looking, there were none listed on Ebay and none of the u-pull-it yards (or any of the others) around here had any.
Since we do not salt roads here in the winter, many older vehicles stay on the road until there is not much left, and when they do make the yards the vultures hit them like sun ripened road kill......
As Christmas is approaching, vehicle purchases are frowned upon by the wife, and they are working so I will look around some more later.
By the way, if anyone has an interchange book, what years will fit a 73 F250 without changing the plug? I have seen one or two that must have been later model as the plug did not look the same....
I took the intermittent switch back and ordered the right one and got it and it works just fine now. All I need to do now is find a ****, mine is stripped.
This is interesting, fordpickup460. Just yesterday, I was at the Sedro Woolley NAPA (Valley Auto Supply), and they were striking out on a stock switch for my 1977 F250. I had already sent them images of the wiper switch, and received images of generic replacements. I walked out thinking I was headed for a junkyard, unless I got incredibly lucky and Ford would sell me one for a ton of money.
My wiper switch is at the point were you have to wiggle it just right to get the wipers on steady. It still sends power to the washer when you push the ****, though I need to replace the washer. (If you pull the ****, it fall off in your hand.)
I'm also a bit annoyed because that same NAPA sold me a turn signal mechanism for $67 and it turned out to be for a '78-79. I found out after I had pulled the steering wheel. I should have read the fine print on the package. I took that back yesterday, so they could hand me to correct item -- which is $87......
I want a better wiper switch, and I wouldn't mind a delay. But stock (mine is without delay) would be fine. I can always install an aftermarket delay, if I really want to. Mine is a work truck; it just want it to work. I think I'll go find a friend who has old Fords in his back yard...
