E4OD trans problems

E4OD trans problems

okay i have a 1994 f250 turbo diesel idi with a E4OD and i had it rebuilt 2 months ago it was shifting hard so i adjusted the tps and it drove great. smooth as could be then the next day my tach wasnt working (jus replaced the sensor less than a month ago) so i replace a relay and it worked but i went to drive it and its stuck in 2nd gear and wont shift down but shifts up around 3000rpm also my ABS light came on.

Was your overdrive light blinking? You might want to get a code reader and scan for codes.

abs light coming on might mean the VSS(speed sensor on the top of the rear end) is going bad or the wiring is bad. does the speedo work flawlessly?

If its stuck in second gear I dont think your getting power to the transmission, Bad trans relay switch but heres a few tests you can run.

Erratic Shifts
Bad VSS

Can cause erratic shifts and LU problems. May or may not set code 29/452 (VSS speed
sensor signal to low).
Note
VSS is located in transmission tail housing or differential.
To check VSS
1. Remove 2-wire connector end.
2. Hook DVOM meter leads to pins on sensor. It doesn't matter which way you hook
up the red or black leads.
3. Set scale to AC voltage / 0 to 40 volt scale.
4. Raise vehicle so rear wheels arc off ground.
5. Start vehicle, put in 'D" and make transmission upshift. Watch meter.
6. You must see an increase in AC voltage or VSS is bad.

Before or after overhaul, harsh engagements and shifts.
Upshifts late and harsh. No LU and no 3-4 shift.

Cause
TPS (throttle position sensor) or FIPL (fuel injection pump lever) sensors bad or out of
range.
Check TPS/FIPL
Here's how
1. Hook DVOM black lead to battery negative cable.
2. Turn Key to on position (do not start engine).
3. Set meter to DC volts/ 0 to 40-volt scale.
Note
Leave 3-wire connector hooked up to TPS/FIPL sensor for test.
4. Probe black wire on 3-wire connector with red lead of meter. Must be less than .1
volts (that's 1/10 of a volt not l volt). Will probably read in milli-volts. This is the
ground wire. If more then .1 volts, ground is bad.
5. Now probe the orange wire. Must be close to 5 volts. This is reference voltage
sent from the controller. No voltage means an open wire between the sensor and
the controller. Low voltage means the wire is shorted to ground.
6. Check the green wire. It should be around 1 volt. Leave the red lead hooked up to
the wire and steadily open the throttle until it is wide open. You should see a
steady increase in voltage up to 4 to 4.5 volts, with no fluctuation. Be careful! If
you open the throttle to fast the DVOM will probably show 0 voltage or out of
limits. This is normal. If the voltage does not increase at all the TPS/FIPL is bad. If
it is below 1 volt and never gets to 4 volts, it might just need to be adjusted.
To Adjust FIPL if you don't have a scanner:
1. Loosen FIPL adjustment bolts.
2. Hook DVOM black lead to battery negative cable.
Note
Leave 3-wire connector hooked up to FIPL.
3. Turn key to on position (do not start engine).
4. Set DVOM to DC volts/ 0 to 40 volt scale.
5. Probe green wire (center wire) with red lead of meter.
6. Idle- 1.1 to 1.4 volts.
7. Wide open throttle- 4.1 to 4.5 volts.

With no power to the transmission you will get:

4th gear (overdrive but without torque converter lock) in "D"(even at standstill)

2nd gear in "1" or "2"

And reverse in "R"

No automatic shifting will happen but you should still be able to shift from second to fourth manually.

Was blinking but I adjusted the tps and it stopped and the speedometer does work.

hi im also having problems with my 1994 f250 7.3 idi turbo its has an e40d overdrive light always blinks speedo-meter doesnt work and shifts weird when your going down the highway and say you step into it to pass someone its like it downshifts and revs out as if it were in neutral and when driving around town it is always shifting up and down in and out of gears.

welcome to FTE tanner (ideally,you want to select the "new thread" tab next time.)

you can't run an electronically controlled trans without a speedometer tanner.if your blind to the vehicles speed,this trans is too.she won't have a clue what gear to select without knowing.the issue could be the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) that's located in the center of the rear axle.less common could be the PSOM (the speedo gauge.)
you should consider the truck broken down until fixed.a low cost to free fix could lead to a multi thousand dollar repair if you let the trans hunt and bang gears blindly like that.so be careful.
