Im sure there is plenty of people going to think me nuts for this one, but yes im looking to swap in a E40D to my truck. First thing i would like to know, what is it going to take to make this thing work? Preferably i would like to find a stand-alone computer for it. Maybe that is what the banks thing is.. im completely un-informed when it comes to autos. Do you just need the TPMS (VCC or w/ever its called) and the TCM? Any input you guys can offer would be great.
Oh and if anyone knows the E40D's rough dimensions as compared to the ZF.. that would be handy. Hoping its a hair shorter, height wise.
This one im looking at is $240, guy pulled it from the truck he got cheap as the front tranny seal was toasted, he claims it shifted good but only drove it about 20 miles. He is pulling it to stick in a built 4r100. It also has a rebuild sticker on it, but he doesnt know the mileage or maintenance. Sounds like a pretty fair deal to me, worst case scenario im left with a case, so i should be fine paying $240 right? Tranny is from a 97 p'stroke
Not that old yet, but ive come to find out that shifting all the time really isnt that much fun. Also, for how i drive and what i have in store for the rig an auto will just work better and be more reliable. I have other plans for the zf anyway, this motor and tranny is going in something else.
for that price tag, i think its a fair gamble. from what i've read, you'll need a computer for it, wire harness, and a handful of sensors, of which at least a couple attach to the IP
I hated my e4od but i guess its all personal preference. Good luck with your swap. I just got rid of all my e4od stuff about a month ago too... i had the e4od, and cross member ect.

You need the shift linkage, column, computer, TPMS, harness, crossmember, torque converter, and flex plate. Chances are he's keeping most of that stuff, so see what you can find at the junk yard. The computer may/probably is different for the PSD. You might be able to grab an IDI TCM and plug it in. Not 100% sure since I never deal with strokes.
Price isn't bad. I paid $100 for my spare E4OD and got all the goods with it plus help pulling and loading the sucker. The only thing that concerns me is that the fluid in it stinks.
I rebuilt my e4od and seem to recall the guy at Transtar asking what year for the valve body. It had to do something with a bank of resistors to control the valves that are mounted on the IDI valve body as apposed to them being placed in the PStroke computer. The guy said it would be bad news if you used both or none. I would call a trans shop to verify. I paid $225 w/o tax for IDI valve body.
Thanks for all the input guys. And correct about the sensor / resistor or w/ever, the guy is apparently familiar with IDI's as he mentioned the same thing in his post.

Well then....???? Haha, how tough was it? Im thinking of converting the pedal assembly, steering column, brake booster and master cyl of a 80-91. I think that because i would like tilt as well, but its not a very big deal compared to getting a cruise wheel. So anyway that could take care of the shifter, or... im thinking B&M Hammer How did you end up getting everything wired in, stock transplant or aftermarket stuff?
If you're set on it, a standalone is probably the way to go. I tried swapping in my auto when I found out my DMF was taking a dump, but even with all the right stuff sitting in my donor wagon it turned out to be too much of a hassle. Yeah, I bit the bullet and did the SMF conversion, wish I had time and money to do the standalone/E4OD but the baby came a month early. I have the steering column, TCM, and transmission still sitting around, although 1500 miles is a bit of an obstacle...

the valve body could stay.it was the solenoid pack you had to change correct?
you could look into the bauman stand alone controller. i think the banks controller just raises line pressure.
are you sure that the '97 stroke e4od will bolt up to the idi motor. i know the stroke's use a 6 stud converter but i don't know if there are other differences.
If your going to use the brick steering column thats going to make it a bitch fitting all that...
But the computer is pretty simple just get schematics from my album its best if you can get the entire wiring harness and just cut out the auto stuff or just make one, If the guy is just going to change to a stick the only thing youd need to make is the FIPL wiring and the brake sensor which just tells the trans to come out of OD when you hit the brakes (light activated) The OD button,A tach,A temp sender for the trans, And power block or just mount a single relay The harness on the trans should come with it and the computer...Well I was building the harness I was also doing electrical checks as it was being built,Then as I was installing it I checked again.
But well I was building mine I wanted it to look factory so I put the "wait to start" light "water in fuel" light the vacuum "brake" light the complete glow plug system activated by the key and the brick nose gauges and fuel sender so yours with just the trans will be a breeze
As for the big booster I fabbed up mine I added in a 2" spacer and 1 hardened nut for a spacer and filled and redrilled the 4 mounting holes on the bracket the booster mounts to....Took about 4 hours,Sorry I didnt get pics of that guess I should of but there is finished pics in the album,Will give you an idea.
The E4OD box fits nicely under the dash next to the fuse box.
It sounds like alot but its pretty easy....If you have the patience.
And yes I'd do it again!
I love it!! when boost hits hold on!
