How much out of roundness can a 390 have before having it bored out. I have a 390 thats around 5 thousands out and currently bored to 30 over.

.005 is quite a bit for a stock street motor with cast pistons, and since you are .005 out of round, you are probably what, .008 or even .010 at some point on the piston?
I knew a guy who worked at a bike shop. They used to put the piston in a vice to make it "fit" in a situation like that. Bet that motor went the distance.

Depends on what you are going to do with it I suppose.

Find a 360 block, bore it to 30, and be done with it
.005" out is a bit much. Is it worn .005 bigger than .030 over in one spot like down low in the bore? Or somehow been overbored a bit too far?

Yup, 360 blocks are the exact same thing. And very plentiful.

360 and 390 are different. 360 stroke is 3.50 and 390 3.78. Plus I was told 390 has better gas mileage since it has longer piston stroke than a 360. Fe complete engines are running $150 each around here.

The
BLOCK is identical. Not the rotating parts.

You might be able to go .040 or .050, but the FTE FAQ's say it's a gamble due to core shift:

I'd try to overbore it again fwiw.

My 360 block was bored to .060 and i changed to crank, rods and pistons to make it a 390. It runs perfectly and no heat issues.
