Question 352 to 390

I have access to an excellent used 1967 352 block standard bore and am considering having it bored .050" to standard 390 bore size. My concern is this: will boring a 352 .050" make the cylinder walls too thin and cause overheating issues? I don't have a "pocket sonic tester" handy to tell for sure. It will be used for hauling/towing in a '72 F250, replacing the existing 360 and will see lots of traffic. I'd prefer to build a separate engine to keep the truck on the road and save the 360 for the future.

It'll be fine. 352's commonly are overbored to 360 / 390 dimensions with good results. I wouldnt worry about it.

another option, albeit a little more expensive: is to get a set of custom pistons. Then bore only as needed and you can get the compression ratio you want. this would leave some room for another bore/rebuild if it ever needed it.

you used to be able to get .125 pistons for the 352.i would think the 352 390 use the same block.same cylinder walls.

I have heard mixed results boring the 352 to 360. If I remember correctly, someone said when they had theirs bored, it didn't last long, while some others said they had great results. I was considering doing that and ended up getting a rebuilt 390 for $200 :-) Still not sure what I am going to do with the original 352 for my '66. Matter of what you want to spend :-)

Strange i have heard of dozens of 352 to 390 boring. After all it is the same block. Maybe your 352 was damaged?

Mine is fine, still stock bore, never been touched. I was just stating what I heard from others quite awhile ago, so my memory could be wrong (has been over a year). But, I would have got the information from other members on these forums :-)

unless the cylinder bores are bad just hone it and keep it a 352

The 390 and 352 are the same block. I am doing the same thing you are talking right now...my block is at the machine shop as we speak getting decked. The nice thing about doing this, is you can go with the standard bore 390, and know that you still have a couple rebuilds left in the motor. One thing you need to do is get 390 rods...they are shorter than the 352 rods.
