can this be done?

Im a new member and this may have already been covered, and apologize if it has, but i'm in the process of needing an engine rebuild. Ive got a 352 complete motor. Are the 352, 360, 390 blocks the same or am I going to need a 360, 390 block. I was wanting to take the 352 and bring it up to 390 specs. This is going in my 69 2wd ranger 4spd. Man is this fun to drive. Im going for mileage (yeah I know) but would still like to have some good power also. Any and all help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. This has to be the best site on the net. Thanks.

The 352 is a 4.00" bore and will generally go the needed 4.05" bore for a 360 or 390. Have the block checked by a machine shop to verify the over bore is acceptable. For a 390, you will need the crank, rods and pistons with the appropriate skirt length (some 360 pistons will not work). You can also use a 428 crank to get a 410 motor. 428 cranks are bit more expensive.

The FE motors and good mileage are not typically associated. I think just about any FE, provided the same truck weight and appropriate gearing will yield comparable mileage, provided the engines are configured similarly. In other words, I don't think you'd see much difference in mileage between a mild 360 or mild 390, if configured the same and driven the same.

Measure cylinder bore taper, you may get away with a cylinder honing and a set of rings on your pistons. If taper mandates boring, take it out to 4.05, standard bore for a 390 and 360. Buy a good set of pistons, be conservative on the compression ratio, turn the crank and recondition the rods, add a camshaft with some bumps in it (crane 901), balance the rotating assembly and drive it.

If your just going to be useing this motor for a daily driver. No weekend dragracing or real heavy towing then go out and buy a master rebuild kit with all the rotating parts. http://www.larrysperformance.com/data/enginekits.html has a kit that has everything you need (except the rods) to convert your 352 to a 390 in one kit.
