recently I purchased what was said to be two 390s I know the differences in the FE motors and would take one of them over a 460 or small block any day. But when I pulled one motor apart I was upset to see that it was blown up. The #7 cylinder was severely craked and the rod was completely destroyed. But the pistons had 410 cast into them, this motor had the facotry head gaskets. the second motor was ok except it sat outside for a while and had lots of frozen water in the oil pan (northern march weather) and had water in some of the cylinders which had pitted them but not enough to throw them out. This motors pistons had 360 cast into them, and had looked like it was recently rebuilt. The 390 and 360 and 410 all had the same pistons but different cranks. I have not measured the cranks yet but could anyone tell me if these might not be 390s? I would like to have a 410 if I could use its crank in the other block if I find new rods. But could the one be a 410????
measure the stroke, it's the only real way to ID your FE's displacement. Obviuosly there could also be differences in bore size as well.
3.5" = 360
3.78"= 390
3.98"= 410 ( I believe these cranks are marked with a U, ie 1UB or the like) Check the bore here, could be a 428 if it's 4.13" or bigger).
I hope I got the numbers right, pulled them out of my head. I'm sure I'll get correctd if I missed.
friend at the machine shop told me that if i wanted to build a 410 out of an FE to get myself the crank, flywheel and flexplate from a 428 and use the stock 390 pistons. this will actually make it a 410 stroker he said. And you better believe when i rebuild i will be looking into it.
