Anyone have any experience with attic venting? The air conditioner (about 5-10 years old) can barely keep up and their is a 10*-15* difference between the upstairs bedrooms and the main floor and another 10*-15* difference between the main floor and the basement. The air conditioning bill this summer is going to kill us unless we figure something out. Even at 80* outside, the air conditioner runs for hours just to cool the house a few degrees.
Chris, any chance you have an inch/lbs torque wrench?

Sorry I won't be around this weekend to help.
I have one Jay, I can bring it to you and give you your muffs back. It's 1/4" drive.

It is at work. I'll toss it in the pickup and drop it by for you tonight probably.

You could have a couple things going on. The fan does not have enough power to push the cold air all the way to the top floor. You could have a plugged condenser outside or evap inside. How is the airflow coming out of the vents? I would clean them or at least look at them and check. Could be low on freon. Checking for low freon would require gauges. Inadequate insulation in the house itself. Make sure the vents to the basement are closed so you are not trying to cool that. The a/c unit itself is too small for the size of the house.

The airflow isn't exactly stellar up there. The furnace and A/C were replaced around 5 or 10 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if it's too small. The P/O got cheap when it came to things like this.
I don't think it's low on freon. The air coming out of the vents is COLD. It's either an airflow problem or heat buildup issue (probably both).
The insulation is probably about 50 years old, except the attic. We insulated the attic towards the end of winter. There was only 3" up above the bedrooms. Now, there is probably close to 20". The house is a story and a half with the upstairs bedrooms being built into the roof trusses. The East bedroom isn't too bad, but the west one with all of the afternoon sun is horrible.

Sounds to me like airflow maybe the biggest issue if everything else is cold. I would check the coil inside the unit in your basement. That could be partially plugged causing low airflow. From there I would check with a hvac guy and see what size unit your house is suppose to have and see if that is the problem. If it is there is only one fix and that is a different a/c unit. You might also be able to get a bigger fan for the the house that spins faster and pushes more air.

Once your camper ac is fixed you can plumb it into the house to help

was talking to the hvac guy at work. check the filter, it could be plugged or too restrictive. He was saying that he'd do the cheapest filter possible, and just change it every month, assuming you don't have alergies.
