good day i have a set of headman headers on my 79 s/c with the 460 these headers have the ball and socket set up and not the old style flat flange and whats happening is the 3 bolts that hold the 2 flanges together keep lossening up causing exaust leaks and lots of noise i have used double lock nuts with lock tight and now it seems like the flanges have bent loosening them up again any one else have this problem? i am thinking i may have to remove them get ahold of headman and see if i can buy new flanged, double them up and see if that works very frustrating when a $ 700 system is crap
Yea, sure is a poor design and that problem is posted from time to time. There probably isn't a good permanent fix other than buying a new set of regular flanges, taking the headers off and taking them to a good welding shop to remove the ball ends and go back to the regular style. Those things are crap and I have no idea how that idea ever got off the drawing board.
I had a set and the same problem too, I have since changed headers but one thing that did help was to put the first hanger on each side as far back as possible, I put one behind each muffler just ahead of the rear axle and the other one a couple feet ahead of the rear bumper. That allowed the pipe to move a little with the engine instead of literally twisting the ball and socket joint. They stayed tight a lot longer that way. Went from a once a month problem to over a year when I changed the motor and headers last time and they were still not leaking.. I tried double nutting them and everything short of welding the joint solid and that worked the best for me.
I have the same headers and the same problem. BAD idea from Hedman. I bought mine from JEG's and when I called them they said too bad. I am calling Hedman this week. Good luck on yours Gary LP in Nebraska
