Don’t Know of this Forum is really active or not anymore but I spotted this Oldie up in VT today. Has some life (rust) to her but still pretty as ever IMO.
Saw this one during the summer and just found the video of it, super clean build. This one is actually right down the road from the truck above, taken a week ago
My factory shell had a slider with a lip (for the boot) and I installed a new slider in my cab with a lip so I could install the basic rubber bellows/boot/thingy that attached between the windows. But I've never sen that "leaf guard" thing before.
In my case the boot goes between the two windows, but you retain both windows in place and can then leave the sliders all the way open for pass-through or talking or whatever. In the pics they had the type of boot I've also seen many times back in the day where the windows were removed entirely and the whole area was opened up. I used to see those mainly on full blown campers. Not as often on shells/toppers/caps though.
I'd agree that the riveted on cover is an owner add-on, or perhaps something a camper dealer put on for them. But I can say that it's probably to keep the extra leaves and other debris from collecting on the boot and in between the cab and cap.
I did that this year myself, but because I wasn't driving the truck I just laid a big rubber strip over the gap and down the sides. What a relief to not have to clean out the build-up between the cab and bed for once!
