I just picked up a 2000 Excursion with the 7.3 and 271,000 miles on it. I had the truck looked at by a shop Ive been using for a while and he said it sounds like and injector is "dropping" I have no clue what that means. I assume its an intermittent injector that needs to be replaced. He said they can do a "buzz test" to pinpoint wich one. Around 1,200-1,700 Rpm its a little rough to get going and is worse when the motor is cold. I Changed the oil in the HPOP with a mighty-vac but that didnt seem to help as well as ruining injector cleaner in the truck. There Is no smoke of any kind no hard shifting or excessive blowby. There is a little almost like steam coming out but Im guessing this is normal for a high mileage diesel. I was wondering how you can diagose the injector or problem since I dont know much about diesels. also I have heard good things about Alliant Power Injectors and from what Ive read there brand new. There is no CEL, No codes.
I plan on taking it to either the dealer or a diesel shop monday but I was just curious If there was any way of knowing. Will it throw a code or do I need to pay someone to tell me what it is? The dealer here wants 105.00 an hour just to diagnose it but, I plan on replacing it myself.

The problem is that the dealer will tell you that #3 and #8 need to be replaced. Actually, most places will tell you that.
To be diagnosed correctly, there WILL be some time involved. Just hooking up a scanner, running two tests, and checking the diagnostic trouble codes will have you spending a ton of money while you PROBABLY end up with the same problem.
With 270K on the clock, if the injectors are stock, it is VERY likely that you have some worn out injectors.....and at this point, if you find that an injector IS your problem, don't do just one. Do them all. However, if you have some mechanical problems with the engine, new injectors WILL NOT fix it.
I know there is no mechanical problems with the engine everything checked out but that one injector. I think the only thing to do is probably replace them all and see where that gets me. I know the truck was maintained at a local ford dealer where it was traded in at. The truck probably needs injector work witch is why it was traded in.. Who makes or re-manufactures quality injectors?
