It should be stamped on the frame in two places. The visible VIN is on the top right (passenger side) frame rail, in the engine compartment. It can be anywhere between the radiator support and firewall but most commonly it's about inline with the alternator.
The second, hidden VIN, is also on the top right frame rail usually about 10-12" behind the front cab mount.
Get a wire wheel or good wire brush to clean the frame rail. Usually they are under years of road grime and oil. Sometimes they are lightly stamped and difficult to find/see. Sometimes the VIN's weren't stamped at all.

Yeah, in most states the important number is the one that's stamped on the frame.
That's the one that's used for title puposes. Doors are too easy to change.
