Had the wife take the truck to the local inspection office today. In kansas all they do is look at the vin and make sure it matches the title. They said I have to find the vin on the frame. So I googled and came up with a few things but none specific to a 1976 ford truck.
They said I have to find the vin on the frame. A few things are pointing me to the top of the frame rail on the PF 6-8 inches from the cab mount.
Just hoping y'all have some advice for me. I hate title BS and the state of kansas at this point. TIA to all.
The frame VIN is stamped in two places on the frame, the visible VIN is on the top right (passenger) side frame rail. It can be anywhere between the radiator and the firewall but most commonly it's about inline with the alternator. The second, hidden VIN is also on the top right frame rail underneath the cab about 6-10" behind the front cab mount.
Sometimes these are stamped lightly and are hard to find/read. Get a wire wheel and start cleaning. Good luck
My 76 doesnt have the visible vin between the firewall and radiator either. You can get to the one under the cab but it takes a little work.
I got a little wire brush, hand towel, steel wool, CLR(or other rust removal agent, I'll call it CLR just to make it easier), a little mirror, and a flashlight.
Put some CLR on the frame rail (there is only about a 14" gap where you can get to the top of the rail) let it soak for like 5 min.
Put steel wool on the frame and put the towel over that so that it hangs evenly on both sides to where you can grab it.
Scrub frame.
Check with mirror and flashlight and find where whatever looks like a stamping and scrub with little wire brush.
Repeat until you can read the number.
It's a PITA but it actually only took me about an hr. It was the only way to know my frame matched my cab though.
to find mine I took a wire brush to the top of the frame and found some very faint impressions. I then took a piece of chalk and rubbed it over those impressions and then I could see the vin stamping.
I think mine lines up almost directly with the alternator.
