After recovering my stolen 1977 F250 "lowboy" I have been trying to find the vin #'s on the frame to make sure I still have a clean title. The frame was powder coated by the thief and a '79 F350 body put on. Where EXACTLY can I find the vin #'s on the frame and is it the same vin # that is located on my title??
The frame VIN will be the same as on the title.
There are two VINs stamped on the frame. The public VIN is located in the engine compartment on the top right (passenger) side frame rail. It can be anywhere between the radiator support and firewall but is usually located about inline with the alternator.
These numbers were sometimes lightly stamped and can be difficult to find/see.
The second, hidden, VIN is also on the top right frame rail. It's located under the cab, usually about 12 inches behind the front cab mount.
Apparently the scumbag must have removed the numbers than because we have looked high and low and can't find ANY vin #'s! This leaves me wondering what the hell I should do, no way of knowing if it's my frame or not. When I apply for new license plates "since mine were not recovered" I hope they don't insist the vehicle has to go through state patrol for inspections since I will probably not get it back.
Those numbers can be VERY lightly stamped, especially the one near the alternator. I've had a couple that I had to wire brush and then rub soapstone over to read.
If you aren't sure exactly where to look, I've got a stripped frame I can photo to show exactly where the VIN is located on it. Might be late this evening before I"m back at my computer.
+1, my frame vin on the passenger side is very light. It was hard to see even with the paint stripped. Just for info mine is not inline with the frame, it's at an angle and is only about 2" from the cab mount.
Here is another pic for you, and I would think you should have a police report about your vehicle being stolen and recovered to take to the DMV in case you have re-tag/VIN trouble, right?
How did the cops ID it to get it back to you.....?
Thanks to all the fellas that replied to my question. With some serious elbow grease, flashlight, and mirror I was finally able to locate and verify the frame vin# matches my title! Now I have to find a good donor body to replace the beaten carcass that the thief threw on my chassis. If anyone that lives in WA. state knows of a good donor feel free to hit me up! Thanks again guys!
The scumbag was forced to give me the truck back or go to jail, I got "half" of my rig back and he didn't do ANY time in jail because the cop said there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute. Even the cop admitted how screwed up our laws are here in WA. state. Anyway, just happy to get back my '77 F250 "lowboy"!!

This is an FYI. When you finally find a donor cab you can get a replacement door tag (Ford calls them warranty plates) from Kevin Marti. You can also get the paper Fed cert sticker for the door jamb and the special rivets for the door tag. Marti Auto Works - Concourse Quality, Hobbyist Price . That way everything will match.
Marti's work is top notch.
