You should never find Nitrites in this coolant, Unless somebody added the wrong additive or coolant type. i.e. If you dump in a bottle of VC-8 you will now have nitrites and will fail the nitrite test. If you add some of the Yellow or green coolant that you will fail the test. So the nitrite test is really looking to see if somebody made a mistake in the past and added the wrong product.

The 328-0001 test strips are a 3 way test that test for Nitrite Contamination, Percent Glycol for freeze protection and Coolant Reserve Alkalinity.

Where as the 328-00008 determine the corrosion inhibitor

As this becomes more of a common coolant, I would expect to see better testing systems become available to dealers. The test strips are cheap and easy to bring to market but are still somewhat subjective in interpreting the colors vs the charts. As service centers do more testing the refactormeters speed the process and give better results that have less interpretation. And hence you will see more and more of the instructions move in that direction as the devices become more readilly available.

Has anyone gone to a quick lube place to get this check done and therefore avoid dealer prices?

I wouldn't trust a quick lube place to add windshield wiper fluid. Go to a Ford dealer and request they perform both tests or purchase the kits and do it yourself and save some $$$ and know it was done right.

Good luck...

I wouldn't take mine.
Take it to the dealer and they document it on paperwork (mine does at least).
Or do it yourself but Ford didn't make it all that easy.

Yeah, just ask them if additive is needed, what that is (we know VC-12).
Some still get that wrong and dump in VC-8.

I guess if it was a battle between changing the fuel filters or getting to the pet*****, I'm glad changing the fuel filters on this pickup is simple.

BTW, it's on page 61 of the diesel engine supplement manual (2011 4th printing at least).

When I got there to pick it up, I talked to the shop foreman and he said the tech put 3/4 of a bottle in the primary and 1/4 in the secondary. They did reset the message, though.

I said I'll have you guys check it when I bring it in for the next oil change. I'll make sure they have the test kits BEFORE I bring it in next time.
How do you reset the message ?

You can reset the message in the display screen, I think it is under mainetanance.

That really fills you with trust "we just dumped a bottle in". A bottle of what, where? Did it even need any? That message is just activated by miles, there is no sensor. It just means it is time to check it. But let's just dump a bottle in without checking out both coolant systems to see what is going on. Good grief. If they would have had the test kit, would they know how to use it?

Check Coolant

When I had mine checked by the dealer, they said if it failed the test it would need a system flush and the cost would be around $1000. Has anyone else heard it was ridiculously expensive.
