There's a long but pretty old thread on 'orange' coolant. It doesn't answer my question though which is whether a substitute, more easily found coolant that meets Ford Spec WSS-M97B44-D2 has been used by some of the folks here. Valvoline/Zerex have one that meets the spec. Prestone and Peaak as well may have one too.
From my 'net wanderings, it appears that the orange stuff is really nothing more then GM's hated Dex-Cool that has the Ford spec tacked on. I also have a problem with the outrageous price of the Motorcraft branded Dex-Cool that's most likely made by one of the biggies (Zerex??) for that name.
OK - to repeat myself, has anyone used an orange coolant substitute?
I have an old jug of Dex-Cool with the correct Ford specs on it. It has been approved for a long time and is very likely the exact same stuff from the same manufacturer.
Just a note on coolant color. It isn't standardized. For example, Mercedes Benz uses a silicated coolant that is orange, which differs from Dex-Cool. Just use whatever meets Ford's Material Standard for coolant. If it has the MS spec from Ford, it's good to go.
