Coolant Addititve

Against my better judgement (I wont bore you with details), I took my truck (43k miles) in to my local dealer specifically with instructions to test the coolant and reset my message, and to call me if anything else needed to be done...

...they called an hour later saying it was done. All they did was add a bottle of coolant additive without testing anything.

Is this anything I need to be concerned about? Do I need to have the coolant tested anyway?

Seems odd they would just add VC-12 without testing first. The test kits dont take long to run.

You should definately have it tested properlay anyway, they need to check other things than the additive strength (they need to check for the presence of nitriles, if any coolant needs to be changed out).

FWIW, I have 70,000 miles on my truck and have tested the coolant every time the dash told me to do so (4 or 5 times). I test it myself. It has always been OK and never said I needed to add the additive. I went ahead and put the additive in last time I checked it anyway (right or wrong) because I had it sitting there. That was at about 60,000 miles. My radiator is leaking and it was low anyway. They also need to make sure they test and add coolant revitilizer to BOTH cooling systems.

Thanks

Have you ever tried to buy a test kit from the dealer? 99% of the time they don't have any. Why? They don't stock them. If its tested, the Technician has bought his own. Most times they just add the SCA. This may not be true for all dealerships, just the 20 or so I've done business with.

I got the message yesterday so while staying over night in Gallup NM I went to the local Ford dealer's parts department and ask for some test strips. They said they don't sell the strips and the test needs to be done by the service department.

I'd have to agree with whitetmw, I stopped by and called about eight dealers and none of them stock the required gear for this.
