The set summit sells are pretty cheap, I think they're $129.95 now. I know what it's like not having the extra money to throw at somethin though. Truck sounds good.

That would have come in handy. There were a couple pucker moments as it began to trench.

Oh no... Engine developed a tick after the first test drive. Worst case scenario- collapsed lifter, best case- exhaust leak. Also it won't start when at running temp, turns over too slowly, cooled down fires right up. Worst case scenario-pistons are swelling and wall clearance is too tight. Best case- starter's crapping out.
Open to thoughts, comments, suggestions.

Won't start when hot could be timing advanced too much also.

If it was my truck I would re-set all the valves. Ticking could be a loose valve and not starting well could be a tight valve or two. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hoping for the best for you too man. You know what you're talking about as far as worst/best case goes.

On the hard starting, if your saying it cranks slowly, yeah bad starter/insufficient piston to wall clearance/insufficient bearing clearances. If you're saying its slow to start, check spark, air and fuel. For spark, check for advanced timing like Greyman said. For fuel, make sure that you're not getting vapor lock. For air, make sure that your choke isn't closing. I can't remember what manifold you put on there but some air gap manifolds trick automatic chokes into thinking that the engine is cold.

On the ticking, when is it worst? Where in the engine is it coming from? Is it at crankshaft speed or cam speed?

I reckon tomorrow i'll have some time to poke around. I figure I'll retorque all exhaust bolts to eliminate that possibility. Crank engine for maybe one minute, to ensure the lifters are pumped up, immediately remove diver side cover, rotate engine to close valves on #8 and see if I can rock the rockers, I'll do the same on #7. It seems like a easy way to determine if I have a lifter that won't pump up... If anyone knows a better idea, or if my theory is crap, please let me know.

I would pull the drivers side cover off (if thats the side the ticking is coming from) start the engine. Set the valves while its running. Some times you can figure out which valve is ticking simply by placing you finger on each rocker until you find one that is loose. Also you could have a valve that is a little tight in the guide? Hope this helps. Good luck.

When you say set do you mean adjust? My engine is positive stop non-adjustable.

I think you are are on the right track. I would check everything on that side. Rotate each push-rod too, to make sure none are bent, and check the pedestal torque.

Is the ticking happening when it is hot AND cold? Have a stethoscope or a long screwdriver to listen an isolate the ticking. It won't hurt to run with the cover off to listen while looking for oil flow out the rocker ends.

The lifters won't bleed down quickly so you don't have to rush. You could pull the covers first if you want.

Did you check the lifter per-load? Here is a brief discussion on it from another forum. The quoted area is talking about roller tipped rockers but the setting is the same.

When I installed valve train, lifters were in mid travel, as I read was in spec.

Yes I mean adjust. Sorry I thought you had adjustable rockers and if all the lifter plungers were in mid travel it should be fine? Still it wouldn't hurt to double check them. Good luck.
