It's just nuts and bolts. This was my first engine build. I'm only 17, but with the wealth of information out there, almost anyone can tackle these sort of projects.
I respectively disagree. You show skills and patience reflected in your attention to detail and it shows! You are doing a great job that any one would be proud of and from what I have seen you're going to have a great running engine!! Congrats!!!
.
Cleaned her up inside and out with the pressure washer today, all clean for tomorrow's drop in.
From yall's previous experiences, what should I watch out for?
I'm very interested in this build because is very close to the build I'm starting. Couple of questions. Why did you choose a quick fuel carb? Are they better than holleys and edelbrock carbs? Also please post a video when you get it running. Can't wait.
I went with Quick fuel because all I hear are good things about them. Basic design is basically the same as a holly. I was never fond of Edlebrocks's design, besides the accel pump. I also got the annular boosters with the QFT. I'm sure Holley now makes a carb identical to the quick fuel, I just wanted something a little different.
Didn't get as much done as I'd like too, but I think I'm over the hill. Had to pull it to a stop due to breakage of my craftsman torque wrench, a nut was flopping around in the handle, and then the handle came off. All I like now is ignition wiring, tach wiring, starter, radiator, and carb install/ plumbing.
Make sure your initial timing is set correctly. If you have it too advanced, you'll be running hot and pinging but you won't be able to hear it because you're gonna have it at 2k breaking in that cam.
Prime that oil pump with a drill!
Pour a little gas down the carb to get her started.
Have a fire extinguisher ready.
Smile, you're kickin *** man! You gonna put a start up video on youtube?
How long do they reccomend running the engine at 2000 rpm for the camshaft? Also what would be the best oil for breaking in a 400? My thoughts would be that it doesn't matter to much what kind of oil just to make sure and change it after a short while.
WHAT THE FU#K!!!!????
The transmission case just split as I pulled the engine to it via the bolts. Did I miss an engagement on the torque converter?????
30 minutes, break in specified oil or non-detergent oil+ additives.
I pulled the motor back out. Everything seems right. Is there a measurement I could go by regarding the mating surface of the tranny relative to the surface of the torque converter?
Went back outside... pulled converter off again. Put back on, sames position. Spun it around and pushed for a couple revolutions while thinking, and slip, the extra 1/2", I think it's in all the way now....
Set the motor back in, every thing lined up. Had to hold off running bolts to go to work. I reckon tomorrow I'll finish it up.
It's a crappy idea but once I get it togeather, I'll run the crack with a dremel and fill it with some jb weld, That might hold off until my ZF 5 swap... All the more reason to get the new tranny quicker
Hate to bring this up but if you didn't have the torque converter installed in the transmission fully and then tightened the bolts up so much as to break the case you have bigger issues now.
All that pressure that it took to break the case was being backed up by the transmission pump. While it is possible.... chances are that you damaged the pump.
I hope it didn't but from what I understand it doesn't take much....
