I'd just have to get 25/hrs a week to make it work. (not to mention all the part out opportunities to get extra $)
You are forgetting a ton of expenses.

Electricity
Water
Sewer
Telephone
Internet
Web Site
Professional Organization membership
Repair Databases
Account suite
IT/Computers
General Liability
Healthcare
Advertising
Payroll
Taxes
Property Taxes
Security
Fire Protection
Warranty expenses
Etc, etc, etc...

Bottom line is that it is NOT cheap to run a business and keep the lights on.

That one won't work. They just rezoned in the city limits and no way they are gonna let you work on cars in that location. They are gonna want you out in the industrial park. Time to build new! Not to mention that building would probably take $40,000 to renovate it to work on cars.
Exactly. So many people fail to realize all of the overhead that it takes to run a business, especially one that has employees and one that will be there in another 10 years. I am preaching to the choir though; you know what I am talking about.

It's too bad about that location not likely being able to be converted to a shop, It'd be darn near perfect for something like this. Decently close to a main road, relatively close to the university.
You may start at a low rate but you are going to lose money right away. That is stupid. The kind of customer you want to attract is not the one that shops on price only as they will be gone if you ever raise your rates. When you discount yourself it is hard to build a reputation.

I would argue that it cannot be done in that area.

ok, so start at a normal rate and issue coupons... either way.

It's not that I didn't think of those expenses, Its that those aren't huge expenses in a one man operation.

Especially considering a timing belt repair (1 day of work) would cover them all.

Would Morris be tough? yes. Would it be impossible? no. The big thing would be using the shop to dismantle cars and stock used parts, and selling them on the internet through multiple venues. Not to mention, knowing a good tow guy (or 2) to recommend my shop, whenever possible

Go look at housing prices in Morris. Looks like there is ok housing for under 50k.

Well I guess we will have to agree to disagree because I know small town life out here and that kind of business isn't going to last and raising rates is not a good way to keep customers. Better off starting out competitive.

I agree Chris and yes I know what it's like out here! It all seems good on paper but doing it is a whole different thing.

It still doesn't make sense to start a repair business that has limited cars to come in out here in this part of the state. Once the college kids are gone there are very few of those cars here to work on.
