I've seen guys forget lo lock the fiver & when they pull away the whole trailer falls onto the box destroying both side & the tailgate & the trailer so I guess one gate isn't so bad.............

Yep, seen it 3 times myself. I consider myself lucky to have not done this.
I also get a little grumpy when folks try to talk to me when hooking/unhooking trailers. Never a good idea.
That's what happened to me...
but actually, I didn't use any new words ---- all old faithfuls !!!!!!!!!!!!!
not really - the wife knows when I get real quiet that there's a lot of rumble in the gut !!!
Was at the storage place and had truck in low range to move back up the hill to connect....
got partially done and someone two places down came in and asked about the new 5er...
Well, I should've started the process over... but "I'm too smart to mess up" - yeah, right !!!!!!
pulled out easy as always and everything was fine....
once out the cover... stopped to take it out of low range and when I took off too much torque, so let off as I didn't give it enough time to shift from low range and was stopping when CRUNCH !!!!
only thing that saved sides, was guess my stopping to reshift and it only slide off enough such that the trail air pin dropped on back of slider and kept it off sides of bed !!!
As it was, sorta expensive lesson - only $400 for tailgate without camera,
but could have been MUCH more expensive !!!
NOW I discovered trailer checklist in driver information display
and now I have TWO spare tailgates including this temp one I picked up cheap !!!
It looks like you just need to swap out the handles and you are good to go!
thought about diving into it, but
with the lock mechanism, step, camera, etc... a bit over my head I think -
will study the tear down a bit on the old one before I try it,
or will bring it to the 'professionals" if I don't want to break anything else!
no rush as we are leaving in 6 days for a week and actually want to try the louvered gate out...

lesson for the day - check and check again
Speaking of checking and checking again... I left you (or anyone else with 5th wheel experience) a question in my air bags thread. Please comment when you have an opportunity
P.S. you can handle that tailgate...they aren't complicated!
I followed my buddy that bought my 2500 HD two days ago 30 mi from our jobsite in the mountains to his house to look at the flood damage to his boiler. I reset the mpg calc when leaving b/c I dropped my trailor. When we got to his house I called him over to rub it in, I got 26.7 mpg. It looked good for show but its all downhill with only 2 stops. I'm setting him up for when it's time for a new powerstroke!

Called a bud with a body shop I've used a lot here in DFW area (had a teenage son with an turbo'ed eagle talon ) and they are swapping the camera out and touching up any scratches he finds for $35 ... not worth my time and sweat
He says to tell everyone to do something with the tailgates...
even locked they are easy to steal !!!
a c-clamp over the passenger side slotted hinge,
or vise grips, or .....
JD, thx for the advise, I put an adjustable hose clamp around the slotted end of the tailgate hinge.....so they cant just lift it off............what do you do??
