Sean, Gentlemen, very cool thread. Sean, that’s beautiful work you’ve done restoring those lanterns.
I spent the evening reading the whole thread. I’m not a collector, I’ve used them in the Bush a few times, but never owned one personally. When I was a kid we used kerosene lanterns - maybe we had a Coleman too, I really don’t remember.
I bought a new single burner stove about 10/15 ish years ago. I’ve really enjoyed it. Works well on my tail gate, or on the ATV, or in my backpack. Some where I have better pics of it on the Alaska highway in the mountains, the Arctic, the Bush, various spots - cooking up a lunch on various adventures and work. It’s been a good little stove, but for some reason it wasn't working last winter, can’t remember why. I dug it out this evening to get it going this week before winter hits.
Id like to get a Coleman lantern, or two, to go with it. But I really don’t know anything about them. Any recommendations? I see a lot of various models and years on eBay. And big variations in prices… I’d like them for: emergency use, outdoor evenings on the deck, camping, and the nostalgia of it.
Edit. One of the things I like about this stove, is it’s compact and pretty rugged. You can pack it up in the truck, back of an airplane, toolbox.. it’s been all over, seen a fair bit of abuse. Usually it’s been wrapped up in my sleeping bag, sweater, bundle of rags.. or something, but always managed to survive.
Jeff agree those 442’s are handy and will last forever with some care.
The 220 series D, E, F, are equally rugged and reasonably priced at garage sales (overpriced on the Bay).
If you go to CCF classified section and ask for a 220 lantern, you’ll likely find an Ontario collector that’ll give you one for a song; they’re that common, especially F.
I got my stove working again, thanks to your link Sean, and the friendly people over at CCF. The leak was in the fuel valve. #8 Viton orings.
I also came across an older beat up 242B, which I thought would make a nice decoration, or maybe a future project.
I forgot how much light these lanterns give off. Hope to get the 220F ready to go over the winter. Looking forward to using these on the trails next summer.
