Unhappy Tranny Help

I have a '97 f150 4x2/4.6.......While driving on the interstate last week this happened!

After searching on ebay for a tranny, I saw a lot of listings for just the housing and shaft. Like this one: 4R70W AODE tail housing 2wd and output shaft | eBay

Would it be possible to just replace the housing and shaft on my tranny??? Has this ever happened to any of you guys before???

Thanks!

The output shaft is the first part into the trans on assembly, and the last part out. So the whole trans would have to be disassembled, can't just change it out from the rear.

Anyway, this is a severe trans failure in the output shaft-direct clutch-intermediate shaft-rear planetary area. The trans would have to be taken all apart, pieces inspected, and damaged hard parts and there will be many, replaced. With the knowledge and tools to do so. And that assumes that there is no internal damage to the case. But I expect that the rear of the main case is toast after that shaft came through it. And all of the parts that used to be connected to the front of the output shaft have gone their own merry way without guidance. T'aint good. $$$$

Sorry, Look for another trans

Thank you guys for explaining this to me .
I'll start looking for a good used tranny this week. It sucks, but I'm glad I've received some knowledge from you guys so I'm able to make the right decision and not waste money trying to have it rebuilt!
Thanks again!

Any idea what caused this? It must have sustained some very harsh conditions at some point that caused it to fatigue or crack.

How many miles on the truck? I assume many since its a 97, with that, if it was a manufacturing defect, it sure waited a long time to show up.

Hey Burnstoughford,
I don't have any idea as to what could've caused this. When I bought the truck it had 128,000 miles on it (6years ago), now it's almost 200,000. Never smoked the tires, no towing, no harsh conditions at all. My guess would be, it happened because of the high mileage ,and the tranny was just tired.
Here's a pic of it:

fix

A little JB weld will fix it lol. That looks like a 1000 horse power engine got a hold of it. Sorry that happened but very cool pics. I would guess that the planetay gears gammed inside the trans from a bolt or broken tooth or something.
