full time tech in search of an answer to transmission compatability
94 ford ranger 4x4 4.0 v6 extended cab 5speed man trans with over drive suspect transmission input shaft broken and want to replace with used trans how do i know what trans i am looking for?
tag on the side of current trans reads
F27A
ZA

i am new to this site so if this has already been answered please bear with me
Any five speed manual tranny from a 4.0L which is a 4x4 will work. As long as it's from the same engine and transfer case, anything from a Ranger will work, probably from an Exploder as well, but double check that!
What makes you think the input shaft is broken?
The tranny you are looking for is an M5OD. If you want to do the customer a big favor, install new shift rail plugs (ideally brass or a small soft plug, anything but the OEM neoprene plugs) before installing the tranny. They have a horrible history of leaking while driving. Over time the fluid level drops and the tranny is damaged (toast).
i think the input or output shft is busted because i can look through the inspection plate with the truck running and in gear clutch released and see the pressure plate turning. i can hold a tire and spin it and see the drive shaft turning and feel a clicking in the trans i can feel the trans engaging gears. there was less than a quart of trans fluid when i pulled the drain plug. customer heard a loud bang and no more movement. so any ideas other than the input shaft i am all ears. thank you for the help
I have found a trans just waiting for a reply $300 bucks for a remand with 20k sounds pretty good to me
The pressure plate is hooked to the flywheel. It would turn with the engine. The clutch plate (grabbed between the flywheel and pressure plate) could be turning, and the input shaft still IF the flexy part of the pressure plate gave way. It is made of steel 'blades' that are sandwiched inside the clutch facing, and are attached to a spline that is engaged with the spline on the input shaft. If the spring steel 'blades' break, the spline will stay still as the facing rotates with the pressure plate.
You're gonna have to pull it to know. They don't hold a lot of fluid in comparison to an auto trans, so your level may not be that bad. Not good, but not necessarily an indicator.
