Hi i have a A4LD Transmission in my truck its a
90 ranger 4.0L 2wd A4LD Trans.
The Transmission is going out i have another A4LD transmission
but it has come out of a 4x4 with transfer case.
I would like to know if i can take the transfer case off
the 4x4 tranny and put the tail section on from another
A4LD to put in my truck
Its possible that you have to change the output shaft. My generic tranny book shows only one output shaft in the break down of the a4ld trans ,but shows the 2 different tail sections(4x4 and 2wd housing). But....the breakdown of the 4r44e trans (wich is identical to the a4ld exept for the seleniod shifting valve body)shows 2 different tailshafts AND 2 different output shafts. The 2wd output shaft is aparrently longer than the 4x4 outputshaft.I just did an unsuccessful rebuild on mine(4x4) and can tell you that the output shaft must be removed from the scary side of the trans(inside).Automatics arent that complicated to disassemble and reassemble if you are just going into one to trade outputshafts.Just remember the order that things come apart(or where they fall off)...like bushings and thrust washers. You can get a manual for your trans for $25 shekels if you get disoriented.
That Tanny with the case is worth a lot more than a standard 2wd A4LD. What you need to do is sell it (on ebay maybe) and buy yourself a 2wd tranny. May even be enough left over to pay some one to change it for ya.
If the trans you have from the 4x4 is 91 or later ,its a better trans than the pre 91 A4ld,s ive heard. If it is...keep the trans and sell the transfer case(on ebay or where ever) and use the money to buy an overhaul kit for the 4x4 trans and rebuild it before you put it in. Kits are as little as $80 shekels.
If you are interested, I have a 2wd A4Ld out of my '91. It only has 13,000 miles on it from when it was rebuilt. Even has a shift kit in the valve body. The only thing is you will have to change the bellhousing. I think that would be a hell of alot easier than changing the output shaft though....Tranny shop said they could do it for $20..
I read a post talking about shipping a transmission+ transfer case from california to texas.$229 I would suppose freight from IN. to TN. would be roughly the same but less the transfer case.
