Caliper Guide pins

Hey guys came here a while back with issues on by 05 F250 and the help was great and solved that issue , Now I have another question wife has a 06 mercury mountaineer and I'm sure it's like the ford explores breaks..

I went to change the front Pad saw a passenger side front caliper guide pin is 100% galled, rusted tight will not move the rubber boot is also torn . when I pulled the caliper off . the drivers side and the top passengers side the pins all float in and out when I checked them ..

I assume and I hate to do that but when I removed the caliper lock bolts the guide pins just need to be heated or something to be backed out of the housing to replace them ? Just wanted to be sure as to how the guides come out to replace them .. But this has to be repaired to get clearance to put caliper and new pads back on to the mounting bracket Thanks for any help Roger

If the caliper pin hardware kits for your Mounty are the same as my '04 Explorer, the locating pin with the flanged end goes in the bottom hole on the passenger's side and top hole on the driver's side. Bolt torque is 24 ft-lb and the bottoms are tightened first.

If you are saying the guide pin is galled in the caliper guide hole I would not apply heat. If you can't manually remove the old pin (vise grips are OK to use) you will need to replace the caliper as well as the guide pins.

I'm also not totally clear on the situation. If you were unable to get the one guide pin out, how did you remove the caliper? Did you remove the entire caliper mounting bracket? If you were able to get the pin out and that's how you determined the guide pin is galled, then you should be able to replace the rubber boot and guide pin, being sure to use high temperature synthetic brake caliper grease when installing the new pin and boot. You definitely need to also replace the boot as that's probably why the old pin rusted and galled. I'd also suggest you use some penetrating oil and a wire tube brush or several pipe cleaners to get most of the old grease and rust out of the caliper receptacle.

In the past I've had good luck getting guide pin and boot hardware kits from the local O'Reilly Auto Parts. They were the only place locally that stocked the parking brake hardware kits for my prior 2004 Mountaineer.

I was able to get the bolts out and remove the calipers after I did that on the lower passenger side I noticed that the rubber boot was split But the other bolts on the driver side and top bolt of the passengers side all had solid looking boots in place and they also had a little metal sleeve like that floated in and out to make room to get them back into the calipers. But the one with the cracked boot is stuck or seized up tight and would not move in or out at all .

However I was able to get the pads and caliper on but I know its not right and want to replace what ever I need to ..

Tires and Brakes is not the place I take any chances with.. I have the 4 new boots just not sure what if anything else I need to totally repair the issue . I just want to get everything that is needed in place before I make the repairs permanent ..

I have looked around found what it is called ( caliper repair Motorcraft # Part Number: 18726-05161061
Hardware Caliper Attaching Kit )

New boots and the kit you mentioned below should be the complete set. You'll need some high temperature brake grease to grease the hardware slide as well.

Is there any tricks to remove the piece covered by the boots from the caliper any special tool or anything other then the grease ? Are they screwed or pressed in ?

Its been a while since i worked on one that was stuck, but i though you could take out the bolt and then remove the caliper and the "tube" would be stuck into the hole it is suppose to slide in. I have clamped them in a vise and smacked the tube and put penetrant on them and finaly punched them out. Once out you wire brush the crud to get them back to size, then clean the hole it was in. I nomally paint anti-sieze on the parts and make sure they slide good. If you broke the bolt or had to cut it, you then replace the bolt. If i remember right, the bolt clamps the tube solid, and the caliper arm slides on the tube ??

Yes thanks that how it appears to work I am an old chevy man for ever and they had a much simpler break caliper design I think (: I'll pull it this weekend and beat on it and see if I can get it out .. All the road salt they use here in Ct. on the roads here ruin everything earlier then I'm used too. being from the south.
