caliper pin question

i have an early 99 and the caliper pins keep seizin.I got the green permatex to try and new pins.On the pins one is completely round and the other has 2 flat spots on the pin body.Which one goes to the top and which to the bottom?Guzzle spoke of an upgraded kit.Would that kit work on an early 99?Where do I get it.I have been wrestling with this problem every couple of months and am tired of it.Thanks for any help. John

Good luck finding which is which. I believe that was more "after thought" from engineering because the manual doesn't address this concern. I've always placed the "odd" pin on bottom. My advice for you would be 1. clean the bores well (3m scotchbrite pad), replace all the boots for the pins. Install your new pins, use the Permatex you already have and you should be good to hook.

I have forgone the "upgrade" as it has pins with a rubber seal at the tip of the pin. Brakes are kinda my thing, and I've had two of these seize within a couple months. Not sure why, could be a incompatibility with my caliper mount, I didn't bother investigating. Last set of pins I purchased was the upgraded kind... all they had, so I purchased 2 sets, threw away the pin with the rubber washer and used the solid pins for the truck.

I agree with you CPU. I recently did a complete brake, caliper job on front and rear.
I installed the one pin with the rubber bushing on a front caliper and noticed the caliper would NOT slide on the pins, so I removed the rubber bushing and replaced that pin with a regular new one.
I told the diesel shop about the problem and to be skeptical of selling that upgrade.

I am not that impressed with the upgraded pin, it makes the pin bore even more susceptible to hydro locking especially if a bit to much grease is applied
