Any help would be appreciated. The driver's door button won't lock any doors from master button only, unlock from master button ok - will lock from exterior keypad, passenger side and tailgate button. (Don't know if connected but the illumination for keypad went out recently also.) Apparently went to completely inoperable over several days. 97 Explorer 5.0 AODE. Haynes manual shows 95 and later diagram with auxiliary relay box #4 with 3 relays, no keypad, but this one has a relay station in left rear Quarter (jack comp't) with two large relays (85, 86, 87, 87A, 30 contact numbers) and three small relays (1-6 numbered contacts?). Have swapped, I believe, all relays with no change in symptoms, pulled door panel checked continuity thru master switch, power available to switch, linkages appear free and reasonably clean. Anyone have info on or a diagram for this electrical configuration, any troubleshooting tips or what the extra relays functions are? Also locations for anti theft module or other unknown components in this circuitry?
Thanks in advance
Al
Did you check continuity of the ground wire on the master switch? You might try stringing a temporary ground wire over to the master switch from a good ground location to check that out.
Did not check that with meter, but it appears that switch uses same ground for lock and unlock function?
I noticed a set of contacts on master switch beside switch contacts that read like a diode with ohmmeter; has black and black/red wires connecting to them. any idea what that is?
Thanks, I was informed by my nephews last night that as this was dying that the door position was getting closer to closed for the lock to operate until it finally quit, so the harness sounds like a pretty good bet.
The switch read good with ohmmeter, and I thought I was just having trouble with meter leads making contact when I was reading the voltage to the lock and unlock contacts. Probably thats when I got looking for the relays.
Will post back after I get to look at it again.
Add about 2" (you will be doing this again if you dont lengthen harness) to the broken wire, solder and heatshrink. Check other wires in the bunch that are ready to go, I had to fix 7 before I got rid of all my ghosts.
Added a section to a pink/orange lead and seemed to fix problem. That connector/flex joint is a monstrosity. I'm sure I'll see it again if that isn't all. Nephew found a junk yard keypad that had the light still working and that finished his lock problems.
Thanks to all for help.
95x15, Good detective work. I've got the same exact problem in my 97 but and being not a mechanic just live with it and lock the truck with the keypad.
i have a simlar problem that i cant figure out the alarm will turn on from the remote or the keypad but the button on the drivers door but will lock from the trunk dont mean to hijack the hread but any help would b great
From your profile you are talking about 96 Explorer; do I understand that the antitheft will turn on (doors lock and set antitheft indicator) from all but the driver's door lock button? This seems similar to the master problem above and could easily be a single broken wire or a bad relay. The Haynes Explorer service manual (about $20 at most auto parts stores) has a very little info (brief description and three sheets of circuit diagrams) for locks but does not include keypad and antitheft info. You can pull the cylindrical connector apart in the door hinge, (disconnect battery first), pull the accordian tube off the bottom of the connector and see if you can stumble on a broken wire probably near the face of the connector. Another check that is fairly simple is to go in the jack stowage and find the relay box over wheel well - take it off the body and remove cover; start swapping relays of the same kind trying the malfunctioning lock after each swap until you have covered them all. Just be careful to make sure you don't nick any wires and try to operate the system without all the relays installed. You can do this with the battery hooked up if you are careful.
The other option is to remove the panel (driver's) and check voltage and continuity with a meter at the master door lock switch; note that the above broken wire was not the "lock" lead, in fact the pink orange wire didn't make to the switch.
Good luck.
thanks yes it is a 96 explorer the only thing that lockes the door is the swich in the trunk the key pad on the door and the keypad on the key ring just set the alarm
