So today I decided to change the fuel filters on my new-to-me 2008 Harley super duty (only 10k miles!) I watched all the vids and cruised this site for the tips and tricks.
Following all the advice I opened the drain valve on the rail underneath the truck....and guess what...it never stopped draining the whole time I changed the filter. I was forced to continue and remove the housing that covers the filter (1 3/8 socket) and endure a good amount of leakage until I got the new one in and the screw cover back in place. If I turned off the valve during this time the fuel flowed through the removed filter housing.
Other than that it was uneventful, but that doesn't seem to be what was supposed to happen from what I read on the posts
I had a 2005 with the 6.0 and once you drained the filter canister it stopped and you could change it without wasting a gallon of fuel and getting a bath....I still smell like fuel...but I think the wife kinda likes that...
Also I noticed that the filter was slightly different at one end than what I removed. It fit, but the design was slightly different. The new one had a o ring, the old one didn't ...

Oooh, kinky!
How much fuel did you have in tank?
When I did mine last time I did it with less than 1/4 and drained a bit thru the valve and barely any came out when I got filter out.
I was going to do mine this weekend but gonna wait til i drain tank a bit. Probably this week/wknd for me.
Full tank. I just assumed(I know) that there would be some kind of automati shut off valve that prevented fuel from flowing when you changed the filter. I'm surprised some over funded and underworked governmental agency didn't scream environmental disaster when they inspected the vehicle...
I always take the cap off the tank and let the truck set for 20 min.
Then open the drain plug, will drain about a pint then stops.
Has always worked great this way.
I have never had a problem with: 04, 06, & current 08; but my driveway is slightly inclined and front of truck is slightly higher than rear when changing. I also change the secondary filter under the hood last.
Lots of people encounter the problem though. Nothing in service manual about certain level in tank or the incline of the vehicle, etc.
mine will do this if the front of the truck is parked lower than the back. i park on an incline with front high and have not had the problem again.

I was just gonna suggest this. If you park on an incline with the front end elevated, in some cases, opening the drain separator will result in no fuel coming out. So it should result in very little fuel draining when doing the filters themselves.
