First off thanks in advance for any help, now onto the problem,2004 f250 4x4 with 5.4,78000miles,ex company work truck with routine maintenance, trans fluid changed @ 1 month ago,no problems until today.Got in truck to go to store no problem until after stopping at red light, noticed trans never upshifted, slowed down, turned back home (less than a mile)drove home in low gear @1800-2000rpm and when I got home no reverse either,so no upper gears or reverse so what do you think, recomend?
Was the trans maintained by the company before you bought it? was the service you did the flush type that is comonly done these days? did anyone change the filter? in lots of cases a trans that has NEVER been serviced SHOULDN'T be FLUSHED, but just drained, filter changed then re-filled, also drain the converter if possible, they may have flushed crap through your trans and it took this long to get caught somewhere it shouldn't be.
Might want to first CHECK fluid level......
Fluid level is good, full not overfull, when shifting from park to reverse no response from trans, shifting to a forward gear trans engages but stays in low.Note, fluid doesn't apear or smell burnt, could this be electronic or computer related since it happened so suddenly or is this grasping at straws
OK then,if that's true, what should I look, ask for in a rebuild,or should I get one from ford?.Have they(ford) addressed the problems with this trans or is the aftermarket the way to go?.I think this is the same trans used in diesel trucks, you would think it could handle a stock 5.4.Truck was a work truck, however not beat on,but used, maintenance was done regularly, maybe not the greatest but definitely not neglected.Although truck carried alot of equiptment it was not even close to being overloaded, I can say this because I work for the company and they still have the 2004 I used to drive(it was the only one with center console and cruise control)and with 108000 miles still runs fine, also now I drive a 2006 5.4 4x4 with 105000 miles with no known problems. in case you're wondering, trucks are used for land surveying.
Update-trans is out,yes it's smoked, strange thing is fluid on dipstick didn't look or smell bad,yet when I removed the drain plug there was no question.Torque converter didn't seem to turn smoothly in trans, felt like it would drag, hang up as you turned it,maybe that's normal,I've never messed with an overdrive trans before.New trans and cooler from ford should be here tomorrow, any sugestions on flushing the lines?.Also, noticed trans fluid in the electrical connector(the one with multiple pins above the pan rail on the passenger side),what could have caused that?
Sorry, unable to check those bolts, trans is gone, ford reman with new cooler installed last night.Install went smooth, worst part was getting to the cooler-looks like lots of room until you get your arms in there.Best advice for the whole job is have an extra pair of hands/eyes, plenty of various extensions and swivel joints on hand, also have a trans jack or I used a regular floor jack with a piece of plate steel welded to the "foot",then used wood blocks to make a pan cradle and strapped it down. Also be prepared to get the truck up high enough to clear the jack/trans,ramps,large blocks of wood, whatever can suport the wieght,we also chained the truck so it couldn't roll off the ramps(front)or blocks(rear).Noticed in the paperwork that came with trans they separated trans/transfercase first, and bolted on last.I removed/installed as one with no real problems,a little slow,up a little, forward a little, but not that bad.Note, truck is stock and yes the exhaust is tight but saw no reason to remove.
