I was driving today and my speedometer stuck at 35 when I know I was going faster than that. I stopped at a light and it went down to around 19/20 mph. It stayed at that for several miles even when I stopped at several lights. Right before I got back to the house it started to work again. Is there something I can do o fix this issue? Is it common? I don't know if there is a sensor that may need to be cleaned. I called Ford and they told me that the repair may not be covered under my extended warranty, but first they have to run a diagnostic that cost me $100 just to see what to issues is. At this point than they can tell me if my warranty covers it. Any help would be appreciated.
Seems like that's what happened to me when my differential Speed sensor went out. But that was 3 years ago. So I may not remember exact symptoms. It was a couple hundred dollar repair.
The '06 is notorious for having a cluster issue that causes that. Mine has done it twice, both times when I was traveling and could not get it in for replacement. And it fixes itself within a day. Now my warranty is gone, and if it ever becomes a bigger problem I will be stuck with the bill.
You could try a VSS, but if it didn't throw any codes I don't think that will fix it.
What you're describing sounds more like a cluster problem that a speed sensor problem. You might try unhooking the negative leads to both of your batteries for about an hour, letting the modules reset. This has worked before with other cluster problems.
Also try this. It fixed mine when it did that. The rear diff sensor will wreak havoc with cruise control, shifting, and may set the check engine light.
My 06' F-350 did it once,,speedo and tach were affected,,within 3-4 hours everything was back to normal,,fixed it self,,,and so far I have Not seen the problem again !
My speedo would not start working till i hit 35 mph! No codes no nothing i was puzzled. So i took a shot in the dark and got that sensor in the rear axle and swapped it out, never had a problem again.
Different year truck and all but for the price its worth a shot!
