It's probably a failing seal in the reverse clutch. Sometimes it hold, sometimes it doesn't. If I'm right this is going to happen more and more until it won't go in reverse at all.

how would i diagnose this and what would be the fix ?.. it seems to engage harsh when put in reverse when it does work. im not sure what my next action would be. i was thinkin of flushing fluid and changing filter because im doubtfull the dealer changed the filter when flushed last. i just dont wanna waste money on new fluid just to have to pull the trans and lose all the new fluid.i guess that would be the cheapest route right now though.

You can try the fluid. I would consider it a waste of money. The trans needs to be rebuilt, new fluid won't repair a worn out seal.

in your opinion would it be better to have it rebuilt or just buy a new reman ford unit? i have had trouble with rebuilds even at pro shops and the cost of a rebuild was almost the same as a reman unit .

Then get a reman. The quality of each depends on the person doing the work.
