Take a funnel with a hose and stick it in the Tranmission Dip stick tube. If you drained the tranny then you start off with 3 quarts and drive it for 10,15 miles. Then with the engine running and the tranny in park check the Dip stick. Get yourself a chilton or a haynes manual. They do help out alot.
Still having trouble with my trans. It has no reverse or neutral. It wants to go ahead in neutral but acts like it has the brake on in reverse. Any suggestions? Could I have disconnected something? It goes fine in the forward gears. The Ford garage wants to take it apart.
Sorry about that. I will not say that your tranny is dead, but I will say mine did the same thing and WAS dead. My wife drove it to work one morning and that was it. We couldn't back it out the of parking space. It would move forward but not backward. My mechanic put a used one in for like $500.00.
Maybe you did not put the filter on correctly or the magnet is stuck somewhere it should not be. It worked correctly before the fluid change, correct?
Drop the pan. Make sure the filter is pushed in correctly and make sure you put the O-ring on and it did not get sucked into the valve body or something. Maybe the filter dropped into the pan.
If it does need a rebuild, check out www.netgearhead.com. I was about $850 including shipping for a reman unit with 12/12K warranty. Had to pay about $300 for R&R which was still a lot cheaper than the $2,000 plus that was being quoted around here. It did take about 2 weeks to get it back because they were pretty busy.
Thanks for the suggestions. I took it two different shops and they both said the trans was bad. Something about clutches being stuck. I don't plan on putting any more money into this machine. I just put new brakes, a battery, and ball joints in it. I quit - it is going to our local junk yard. Too bad because I really like the all wheel drive and all the room.
TC,
Certainly understand your frustration... but local bone yard won't give you zip for it... and may be worthwhile to someone else to repair it. Why not sell it? At a minimum, somebody would surely like to buy the 4.0 and the AWD for parts.
What State do you live in?

I live in Iowa - Southeast of Des Moines. I have thought about selling it piece by piece on Ebay but not sure if it is worth all the effort. Seems like everything goes for about $6 - 20. I saw a seat that went for $50. Not sure how they plan to ship. I would rather sell the whole thing. It is 7 passenger XL AWD, A/C, cruise, tilt, rear wiper/defroster, power windows and locks. New brakes, tires, battery, has rust along the bottom, a few dents, oil and coolant leaks, could be driven home...but won't back up. Anybody interested? Make an offer! I would trade for a pickup. I can send pictures.
In addition, it has 4 new ball joints and a front end alignment, new rear axle seals, and a new MAP Sensor ( I think that's it - something that goes between the fuel injection and the air inlet).
