Had time to check the compression and try to determine where all the blue smoke is coming from, looks like I need a complete rebuild.

Since price is always an issue (with the wife) I need to make a decision. Would it be better to try and find a replacement engine, perhaps a 302 which have cheaper parts or rebuild what I have? I am new, but it seems like the 292 is a pain…any suggestions would be helpful.

Compression test results: Cylinder four had good compression at 130, cylinders three and two were around 70, and cylinder one was 35. Five, Six, and seven were all between 68 and 80, cylinder eight was 100.

I vote rebuild it, unless you actually want to install a new engine. A new engine means new mounts and new bell housings and stuff like that. If you bought a used 302, you would still have to buy a rebuild kit. I don't see how that saves money.

Yeah...just 302 are more accessible and the parts are cheaper. I started pulling the engine apart to determine what is wrong with it...the person who owned it did a lot of home grown modifications with the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Looks like a complete rebuild is in order. Wife is not going to be happy

I vote rebuild. The difference isn't that great for a basic rebuild.

If you do swap, don't forget to include the actual cost of the swap. There will be money and/or personal time involved getting it mounted, figuring out the drive line (transmission, trans mounts, driveshaft length, etc), getting it wired, fitting the exhaust, and making whichever other necessary modifications come up. It's a lot more work than it may seem at first glance. If you have to pay someone to do all of this, you'll save a lot buy rebuilding the 292. If you have the skills, will, and place to do it, go for it.

Also, if you do go through the hassle of a swap, make it count, at least a 351. Unless it is a newer fuel injected, roller cammed 302, your mileage and torque will be down. I have yet to see a mileage figure for a stock, non roller, carbed 302 powered slick that is better than a stock Y Block in these trucks. And I just realized that the previous sentence may sound confusing. To be clear, "stock" is in reference to the build of the 302. It does not imply that our trucks ever came with a 302.

Plus Y-Blocks sound better.
