Money to spend...

I have money to spend and I want to make my 77 302 strong. The PO said it was rebuilt along with the tranny, and it has 8000 miles on the new rebuild.... I want to go throught everything and make sure he did this rebuild... In other words, I want to rebuild it because I am not sure if he did or not... I seen a kit in a mag. from summit raceing and it was aprox. 200.00, and came with everything needed to do a rebuild, even asks if I want to include new flathead or forged pistons... What should I do?

Do a leak down and compression check on the engine. If all is within spec, there is really no need to rebuild the mill. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

yeah don't use the united states governments motto of, If it aint broke, fix it till it is.

Do the tests take it for a drive if you cant see any leaks or hear any squeeks let well enough be.

Dont throw your money away. You could tear it down and spend some serious coin, and have no better an engine than you would if you just stepped up to more cubic inches. Im not a fan of the 302, its a car motor.
Continue driving it with whats in it, and work on rebuilding something like a 400m. Then there wont be as much down time on your rig, and you will have a strong engine with some real potential.
A mildly build 400 will outperform a built 302 and last longer because youre not working it. Also, when buying a kit, look up northern auto parts.

Every 30K?? That means I've missed about 7 rebuilds on my
'63 292, and almost 6 on my '68 390... I better get to rebuilding
pretty quick...
