my 98 gator wont start all of a sudden. the anti-theft light blinks and it clicks quickly. when i pull the ey out and unlock/lock the doors, the lights on the inside door flash a few times and then turn off. This happened to me a few years ago and I had to get a new key ($100+). It has a remote start that I have used maybe a couple times when i first bought it 4 years ago. the truck is garbage status and I don't want to put anymore money into it than I have to, but i do need it to haul stuff occasionally.
How can i yank this PATS out or disable it completely and avoid having to pay 100+ for another reprogramming? The key still has the sensor inside it, and the sensor on the truck side should still be in the steering column where it was previously.
would this happen if the sensor in the truck fell out of the steering column or something??
There should be a black plastic box near the fuse panel. It might say Cobra or Python on it. There may also be an OEM key hidden in the plastic shieding near the ignition lock that is often hidden there to eliminate the need for a bypass module in the system. If the hidden key somehow moved away from the PATs antenna the truck would not start. My thoughts are not Gospel as different installers have different methods for their installs.
something similar to this happened about 3 years ago. there was a small sensor thing inside the steering column, but when i pulled the ignition out, it fell out and i couldn't get it to start so i had to call a locksmith to reprogram a new key. I can't afford another bill for this, so i just want the damn anti-theft removed for good. i assume there should be some way to cut some harnesses and install a relay or something. Or is it tied to the ECM?
How close does the sensor need to be to the antenna (which is located where?) to be within range?
If you remove the plastic surround you will see a small wire by the switch itself, that is the antenna. I believe it is programmed to the ECM and it might be cheaper to get another key. Look for the box I described, they are usually tucked up under the dash by the fuse box or behind the driver kick panel. you might be able to remove it without danage to the original wires and then you may be able to use an original key and the original remote entry key fob.
