I picked up a '58 F100 with the 223 and granny 4-speed for my wife. Was going to put a later-model V8 in it, but she insists on keeping the 6-cyl. Can a C4 be mated to the 223, and is there a thread here that explains how to do it and what parts (flexplate/flywheel, etc.) are needed? I did a search but didn't come up with anything. Any help will be gratly appreciated, because I would like to stay on the wife's good side.
Coincidentally, 1964 was the last year of the 223 and the first year of the C4 so that combination was made for ONE year. I do not know if it was available in pickups or just cars. Theoretically you could find the right flexplate and bellhousing and build from there but I've never seen one in an original car or a conversion.
Previous to 1964 those trucks were equipped with the Ford-O-Matic which might be an easier find although not as desireable. (Dual oil pumps drain more HP)
I read somewhere about using the AOD from later cars but I'm not sure it was with the 223. Most owners swap to a correct original overdrive transmission or a T5, not an automatic. I think you'd need a different (3 speed) bellhousing for either.
That's not a lot of info but I hope it helps give you a direction to start looking.
Thanks for the info, Manglass. After some more investigation, I've decided to find a 300ci I6 for her truck. I understand there are several transmission setups that are readily available for that engine; and that you can develop some substantial power with it.
So I'll be looking for homes for two 223's (one with tri-power) and a 'granny' 4-speed as soon as I locate a good 300. I have a rebuilt C4, so I'll probably go that route.
Coincidentally, 1964 was the last year of the 223 and the first year of the C4 so that this combination was made for ONE year and ONLY installed in 223 Ford Custom/Galaxies, not in any 223 truck.
I do not know if it was available in pickups (not until 1965) or just cars. Theoretically you could find the right flexplate and bellhousing and build from there but I've never seen one in an original car or a conversion.
Previous to 1964 those trucks were equipped with the Ford-O-Matic. Whoa! Where did you get this info from?
1954/61 F100 223's used the Ford-O-Matic 3 speed, 1961 was the last F100 to use this trans. 1959/61 F100/250 292's used FX Cruise-O-Matic as did all 223 & 292 1962/64 F100/250's.
FX Cruise-O-Matic (aka 'small' Cruise-O) introduced in 1959 F100/250 292's, prior years used the Ford-O-Matic 3 speed.
1965/79 C4 F Series truck applications: 1965/74 F100/250 240/300 I-6 / 1965/74 F350 240 I-6 / 1975/79 F100/250 300 I-6 // 1969/79 F100 302 / 1975/79 F150 302 (C6 was optional w/the 302 in 1978/79).
1965/72 F350 300 I-6 used MX Cruise-O-Matic (aka 'big' Cruise-O) / 1973/77 F350 300 I-6 used FMX Cruise-O-Matic (the only F Series trucks to use the FMX) / 1978/96 F350 300 I-6 used C6's.
AOD introduced in some 1980's FoMoCo Passenger Cars, 1981 for F100/150's with 302's, later years with 300's and 351W's.
btw: 1973 was the first year for F100/250 4WD's with A/T. Prior years, only 3 or 4 speed standard trans' were available.
Thanks to all you guys for the info. I don't get back to this site very often any more, as my business keeps me and the wife very busy.. But it always amazes me how helpful everyone here is. There is always good ino to be had here. This site has a lot of very knowledgeable people on it.
