300/C4
I have found one at a great price that meets my expectations except for the automatic. It is a 1966 300/3 speed, styleside long bed.
I have a C4 that came out of a 68 200 Mustang that I could put behind the 300.
I have heard that a C4 is a C4 and I have heard that a L6 C4 is not a V8 C4.
I don't know what is true or untrue.
I also don't know if the tranny mount will need to be moved or the front driveshaft resized, or if I need a new yoke.
Basically I don't know anything about this at all.
Im hoping someone here does.
You are welcome to spend your money like you want, but I would not put any non FE package together without Overdrive transmission.
You are also welcome to waste your time shifting gears, I say damn a full grown Ford truck that can't shift it's own gears.
John
I would love to have an AOD behind the 300, the AOD is not all that expensive, its finding the other needed parts that adds up time and money.
I am about to trade a set of 65 Mustang wheels for a 110,000 mile 01 Explorer 5.0 that would drop right in with an AOD if I can find 302 frame perches and automatic column/linkage. I was going to use the 5.0 in a Mustang, but who knows?
Im going to put a rebuilt Bendix ps box in it. I have ben researching the topic and the guys who have them are reporting good results. Since Im only putting 3-4k miles a year on the truck I hope that I will get good service out of the Bendix. For $850 and easy of installation, Im willing to roll the dice. 65/66 automatic NON-ps columns are direct swaps without cutting anything and I want it to "look" original. I want pdb as well, but am holding out for a system that uses my original spindles. I don't want to pay to have someone else do it and I don't want to do a project as large as swapping the entire front end in my driveway.
Im excited, its a fine truck, somewhat plain looking but some personal touches will fix that right up.
