Need help with Code Readers

Please help as I seem to be unable to figure out how to do a search for code readers. I'm trying to find out how to determine if my truck is an OBD1 or OBD2 so I can purchase the appropriate code reader. After many searches I've only come up with frustration.

My truck is a 94 F 150 4x4 XLT Supercab with a 5.8 and E4OD transmission.

Recently my truck started to stumble at idle and while driving down the road. I want to pull the codes to see where to begin with troubleshooting.

Any help is appreciated.

Dave

Pre-96 is OBD -1 a cheap ($20-30) code reader will do the job.

Your truck is OBD-1 and the Equus 3145 is a very good and inexpensive code reader for it. You can also get the codes without one by installing a jumper(paperclip) between the STI and Sig_Rtn lines on the EEC Test connector.. located on the drivers side inner fender in the engine compartment, turning the key to run, and counting the flashes on the check engine light. Note that the test light shown in the pic isn't needed unless your check engine light is burned out.

Thank you for the replies. Conanski I especially thank you for giving me the information on a specific code reader. I purchased it today and will test my truck tmo while it's daylight.

Dave

PS: How do I thank you on the forum. I understand there may be a way to do so but am not sure how.

does this test work on all e4od trannys? also for codes like 56 or 62 or what have you does the check engine light have to blink 56 or 62 times? lol

or does it flash like 5 times then pause then flash 6 for a 56 code then longer pause followed by 6 flashes then short pause then 2 more times for a 62 code and so on for multiple codes?
