I had my 1997 ranger emissioned tested, and it failed. The check engine light went out ten minutes before I got there. And it failed the test. It gave a code P0240 and P1443, does anyone know how I can correct these codes and my Check engine light. Thanks Paco.............
The 1443 code is the canister purge valve. It's the small valve coming out of the charcoal cannister. There should be another valve called a thermistor next to it. Both have electrical connectors and it would be best to replace them both. Not sure what the 0240 code is but you can try obdII.com. They might have some info.
The P0240 code is not an engine management code, it might be a transmission code or something like that, just a guess. What kind of scanner did you use to pull the codes?
My book say's: 0420=Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1). I believe bank 1 refers to the side of the engine that contains the #1 cylinder, so that would be the passenger side of the engine. From there, I don't know. May be an oxygen sensor giving a bad reading, but if you failed an emissions test it may be indicating a bad cat. Do you get a report with your emissions test that mentions what category of the test your vehicle failed?

Good stuff Ron. Just to add a little, it might be the existence of the P0420 code itself why Paco's truck failed the test. The underlying cause of the code is still an unknown, although I agree the Bank 1 cat converter is one of the primary suspects.
Paco, you didn't mention your engine type. Regardless, there is a "downstream" (i.e., after the cat converter) Oxygen Sensor on your truck. I would try changing it out and resetting the computer, then driving around for a week or so. If the code comes back, you have a dead cat for sure. If the code doesn't come back, get your truck tested again and see what happens.
If your truck has two cat convertors, and also 2 downstream oxygen sensors, then of course you want to change out the 02 sensor found on Bank 1, and the Bank 1 cat would be the suspect one.

Thanks to all that of you the gave me your input. My Ranger is a 1997 2.3 Standard Transmission. I had replaced the Cat in November, and both oxygen sensors after I failed the emission test. That's when I also got the p1443 code, and my light also stopped coming on. Even on the startup of the engine. I guess the bulb finally went out. Paco
My truck's CEL is ALWAYS on, throwing codes of all sorts constantly. When I went to have my emissions test done last week I went to autozone 2 min from the testing station, had the codes cleared and it passed. I don't know how they test where you are, but here if the hook up the code reader and there's no codes, you pass. If you have codes showing they hook you up to the dyno and do a complete test.
