Hi all,
First let me thank you all for the help and guidance you all post on here. I just bought an 2000 Excursion 7.3L and I am trying to replace this sensor. I can't get the darn thing off. I saw everyone posted saying to take the nut off the middle bolt but mine doesn't seem to be like that. The shifter arm and cable are behind the switch. How did OP get his switch off since his picture looks exactly like my setup. Are there keys that need to be removed to get the switch to slide off? Any help is greatly appreciated.
It sounds like yours as mine was.... Mine required much excess force and large pry bars and screwdrivers... It was basically destroyed once removed. What happens is that it rusts and seizes to the shaft. Once off you will have to wire brush the day lights out of the shaft, and possibly even a little bit if filing to get it so the new one will go on.
I have this same problem. I even had it once not want to engage at all and was scared to use too much force. Turned truck off and restarted and it went into gear without an issue. Thanks all for the fix!
Will this cause the gear selection indicator to be slightly off or is there adjustment in the cable for that? Mine is almost one selection off. Wasnt real worried about it but if its a easy fix why not fix it.

Easy to adjust. The info is in the tech folder sticky.

I don't know if this is the same problem, please forgive my naivety if not.
My gear selector moves no problem, however I need to play with the break a few times until it will move. It seems like depressing the break only works sometimes, and I need to do it a couple times for it to hit the right spot to let me switch.
Probably not. Do your brake lights work? If the brake lights are not on when you press the brake pedal then the solenoid that is holding the shift handle won't release it.

Would the above fix be right for me?
Thanks for your time guys.
Your symptoms are of either a defective brake pedal switch or it's adjacent wiring harness.
The brake lights are on a separate circuit in the same switch and harness and are unlikely to be an indicator for this issue (except for mis-adjustment of the switch).
Hi All,
Thanks for all of the responses. I got back under the beast armed with a torch and a flathead screwdriver. I pryed a bit with the screwdriver and sure enough the switch broke off from the white collar on the bolt. I took the screwdriver to the collar and that broke right off cleanly. I wire brushed it off a bit and got the new switch on, applying antiseize so in case I need to get it off again it hopefully won't be rusted on. The truck still has a bit of an issue trying to get into park. I checked torx bolts and they are tight. It tries to go into park and still coast at times and if I mess with the shifter into park it will go into park. I'm thinking it might be the bushings on the shift tube. Any thoughts?
That would be a mechanical linkage issue. Probably a cable that was stretched.
Thanks! that was my other considersation on the issue. It doesn't seem too difficult to replace that cable. Any tips you can lend? I am guessing it is better to put the shift lever in Neutral when i go and replace that cable. Thanks again for the reply.
