'97 expedition

how hard to replace shifter cable from stearing to trans , very stiff to put into gear , tried to lube already

Could be the range selector on the side of the trans, aka nuetral safety switch. Sometimes a little scale builds between the selector shaft and the plastic of the switch causing it to bind. Remove the cable from the switch and see if the cable moves freely. If so then the switch could be the problem.

Today my wife's complained that her expy was getting difficult to shift. I put it up on the lift today and discovered an accumulation of gravel by the shift linkage/switch on the transmission (we live on a gravel rode). Once I got the rocks cleared out of the way it worked fine again.
