Transmission? or Plug?

I have a 2001 f350 with the 7.3L of course. I had a problem last Thursday night and Im wondering if anyone thinks they could help me out. So my trucks transmission wont shift out of first gear normally anymore now. The transmission is not slipping at all, and if it does shift into second gear it will shift perfectly fine through the rest of the gears. The times i can get it to shift from first to second is only when either the truck is at revlimiter for 2 or 3 seconds or if i totally 100% let go of the throttle when im going 20mph it will pop into second gear. The transmission is automatic and had just been completely replaced about 7500 miles ago so I dont really think it should need a rebuild or a new transmission again. Im not sure if there could be a plug or anything electronical that could have went bad instead of the transmission instead.

Does the O/D light blink? I think I would drop the pan and check for any abnormal parts, and find a good scanner.

Maybe a shift solenoid?

Mechanical diode failure?

2001's tend to have this failure, and this sounds like the prime symptom. If it's truly been rebuilt, the diode would have been eliminated, not replaced, and you may have a different problem.

As mentioned, you might have a rear ABS sensor problem, which is also the vehicle's speed sensor.

Is the speedometer normal or erratic? Does cruse control work properly?

It's not a solenoid, not a speed sensor, not wiring. It's the mechanical diode.

The transmission needs to come out and get rebuilt. Dropping the pan might show parts of the mechanical diode, but it might not.

12pohlmrob,

Much as you don't want to hear it, Mark's assessment, above, is far, far, far-and-away the most likely scenario.

Throw random parts at it at your wallet's peril.

Come back and let us know how it goes.

Oh, and DON'T tell them to replace the diode with another, though they might not even be able to get obsolete parts.

You really want to put the good replacement parts in instead.

If they EVEN suggest that they can replace the diode with another one, get out of there, quick!

I looked at it some more, and I found that a plug did come out over the rear axle, i can't quite find where it would have went. I will post a picture soon. Could this be the problem? or caused the problem any thoughts?

The VSS is above the differential fill plug. Try looking there.

yeah i checked it out and its not the VSS which is on top of the differential, it seems to be a plug that goes in somewhere else in that area I just can't quite figure out where. Also the plug is connected to a hose, and it has been leaking a very little bit of what seems to be oil.

Are you talking about the vent tube for the rear axle?
If so, it goes in the top of the axle tube. On my truck it is in the left axle tube where the brakeline t-fitting is, by the left shock mount. The hose goes up the the frame and ends. It should be left open and unplugged.
