My truck was shifting fine today until I decided to pressure wash the underside. I put it into 4 lo and let it roll up onto some blocks for easier axcess. I then proceeded to wash it. When I finished i let it back down and THEN put it back into 2wd. Now the truck will not shift out of 1st gear (automatic) till about 3k RPM. IT will hit 2nd gear for a moment then shift back into 1st. Anyone have any clue as to what my problem may be?????
VSS. its a plug on the top of the rear diff. take it out and clean all of the fuzzy stuff from it. then clean the connection points on the plug and the VSS itself. pull it on and off a few times and clean it off again. the plug may have gotten blowen off from the wash.

I took the VSS off and cleaned it. The plug was already clean. This did not fix the problem. My daily driver is now undriveable. I can manually shift it into 2nd but it will not shift into 3rd. PLEASE HELP!!
I did something kinda similar.. Excpet i was going in reverse in 4 low... My truck would not go into any foward gear. Its at the shop right now getting the tranny rebuilt. I hate to tell you, but thats probably going to be what youre going to have to do.
on the driver side of your tranny, thier is a little black box by your shift cable, unplug that and make sure the plug is dry. Check to see if thier is cracks on the thing as well, if water penatrated that unit it will mess it up. My friends ranger went through the same thing, shifted like a POS and somehow kept triggering his OD light and airbag light, how its wired into his airbag light I cant say
I will check the black box. I have checked the trans fluid and is clean and does not smell burnt. The trans has been shifting fine before now. One thing I forgot to mention is that earlier in the day the truck went into safe mode. The overdrive light was flashing and it was shifting wierd. The spedometer and the odometer were out. I pulled all of the fuses and all of them were fine. Started the truck and it ran fine.

Called a mechanic freind of mine and he said that this is probably it. He said to open the box and let it dry out, or let it dry on it's own. Thanks.
The tranny is fine. its prob your PSOM progamable spedomotor odomotor module. in other words the guage cluster.{spelling? lol} go to ford and they will get you a new one. i work for a dealership talked to the guys there and they say thats what it could be. it they said 230 with my discount for just the cluster. i think some one eslse said on here 650 to have them install it.

if this is the case, hit the inside of the plug where its wet with some WD-40. this will drive out all the water and help the plug slide in and out better.
if you needed a tranny rebuild it wouldnt happen all of a sudden. you'd get subtle signs long before it decides to crap out. this is definitly something electric
Turning the key off, hold the RESET button on your speedo, & turn the key on. Release RESET after ~4 seconds, look at the display, & then turn the key off.
The needle should go all the way around and back to zero, it should display something like this E 08 6 in the odomenter.
UPDATE: Ok, last night I did the PSOM check. I held the reset botton and turned on the key. The needle did a sweep and the odometer gave me an E 08 6 reading after pressing rest again it gave me 980CAT. Did I do this right? What does this mean. I am borrowing a code reader tonight so maybe I can get to the root of the prob. To add to all of this I could not get the truck to start last night. It was a bit cool and I need new glow plugs (220,000 on the originals) so I am hoping that is it. I guess we'll see.
