won't start when warm

6.0L excursion 2004 built 9/25/2003

When it has been running it won't restart for about 4 hours.

I understand this is probably a high pressure oil leak.

I am a little confused on the difference between ICP and IPR.

How do I know where to start? Should I pull the IPR and check to see if the screen is broken.

How do I rule out the HPOP.

I saw the powerstroke help dude on youtube 6.0 HOT START ISSUES - HIGH PRESSURE OIL PROBLEMS - YouTube but it seemed that this was for a later version than my engine.

Thanks a bunch.

Steve

You have a very small chance in your early build motor to have a HPOP leak. Have you looked at Duty cycle or ICP pressure to see where your at when trying to start? I would almost try a new CPS sensor. My 6.0 was having problems like you described and it turned out to be a CPS.

ICP = injector control pressure sensor. The sensor that reads the pressure of the high pressure oil system and sends the information to the PCM.
IPR = injector pressure regulator. This is the valve that actually regulates the high pressue oil as desired by the PCM. It variably opens and closes to raise and lower the HPO as the injectors need more or less depending on engine load.

You are going to need something to monitor the ICP, ICP desired, and IPR duty cycle. To test for an HPO leak you can use an air test but it's not simple on the early style 6.0 motor.

Have you had the vehicle code scanned?

Your problem is most likely a bad ICP or/and harness. Test, verify, repair. Like stated earlier HPOP leaks very uncommon on that series.

Unplug the ICP sensor and see if it starts

If you find the pigtail oil soaked or anything it needs to be replaced
may not be it since its a no start hot this is usually an 05+ problem since it doesnt have standpipes and STC fitting it does have standpipes but not lke 05+

the Drainback is in the Bottom of the oil filter housing, when you pull the filter for a oil change or whatever it pops up and lets the oil drain stick a screwdriver down there and make shure it moves freely

did you do anywork since the oil cooler???

do you have any gauges

Thanks I'll unplug the icp tomorrow and see what happens.

Do I have to take a bunch of stuff apart just to unplug it?

Can I drive it with the icp unplugged?

If you have a late build 04 motor it's on the passenger side valve cover on the front. I see your build date, but I don't remember when the late build started. If it's an early build, it's more difficult to get to under the turbo.

Late build location here -> where is the ICP Sensor located on a 2003 f-350 6.0 turbo diesel - JustAnswer

Yes, you can drive it with it unplugged, but not recommended. If it starts (after a no start), you'll know that's the issue, so just go get one from the dealer. Price isn't too terrible, or you can order from www.partsguyed.com or www.tousleyfordparts.com.

Thanks. I have to wait 4 hours to drive it before it will start again. Would be great if I could drive to get the part.

That wouldn't be a problem at all... Don't drive it for a few days like that. It'll throw a code when you unplug it and the CEL will come on, but that's no big deal.

I unplugged the ICP and it still won't start.

How do I know if it is the IPR? Would a bad IPR throw a code.

I'll check the drainback valve.

I vaguely remember when I changed the oil cooler and deleted the egr that it seemed like some people were replacing gaskets on that tube that went into the bottom of the turbo. That seem like a possible problem to anyone?

From npccpartsman:

You are going to need something to monitor the ICP, ICP desired, and IPR duty cycle. To test for an HPO leak you can use an air test but it's not simple on the early style 6.0 motor.

A scangaugeII is a good investment to monitor the above parameters. If you have more funds available, an AutoEnginuity is even better. That being said, it may very well come down to being a leak in the HPO system which will require a bit of "tear down" work.

Also, there is a no-start sticky in the tech folder that discusses the air pressure test if you want to dig into it that deep for yourself.
