E4OD questions. upgrade upshift modulator valve
i talked to my tranny guy today, he told me there is an aftermarket "upshift modulator valve" that will firm up the shift in the e4od. i just wondered if anybody has tried this or not? e4od's are very slushy and i jst wanna firm up the shift a little bit. any input would be appreciated.

If you can swing $630 for the Optishift controller you won't believe the difference it will make. I just got mine installed last week and it's like having a new transmission, only better! My shifts were horribly mushy before and now they are great. With the Optishift you can customize your shift points the way you want them. Plus it will eliminate all of the stupid electrical problems that the e4od is known for.

I just got a '91 3/4 ton 7.3 with the E40D. I am replacing all the sensors for speed, throttle... etc and have been looking for some upgrades. I'm thinking a shift kit has been installed but not sure. What are the optishift and the "upshift modular valve"? Would I have to have a tranny shop install both?

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...installed.html Here is a recent thread about the Optishift.
Also you may want to consider a custom valve body by The Punisher, heard good things about that.

The Optishift controller completely replaces the junk factory transmission computer for your E4OD. You can customize your shift points, shift firmness, and TC lockup. It eliminates the awful electrical problems that the factory transmission computer has. I thought that I needed a trans rebuild or at least a new TC until I got the Optishift, now it's like a new transmission!

Shift Improver Kit -
thats the one i installed.
yes there are higher cost shift kits, but to install the other parts that comes with those, the transmission must be pulled.so unless you plan on doing that, save your $ and just get the valve body modification kit.
it does come with the front pump valve mod too,but i didn't do that cus the trans needs to be pulled.
installed stage 1,and when she shifts, you can't miss it.

the upshift modulator valve upgrade, is a sleeve with a different spring that replaces the "stock upshift modulator valve" there are 3 diffeet one and my tranny guy told me to use the middle one. i'm gonna research the "punisher v-b also depending on price of course. the u-p modulator can be purchased for $25-$50. it slightly firms up the 1-2-3 shift.
