Hi guys, I'm five days and 350 miles into owning a new 2011 6.7 truck and I have a question.
I've noticed the message center is showing the transmission temperature at 194* with just me in the truck putting some miles on so I can pull my 12000# fifth-wheel this coming weekend. My previous truck was a 2005 V10 with the torque-shift transmission that rarely got that warm even when I was pulling the same trailer. Should I be concerned?
No need to worry. My trans temp typically stays around 200* when towing. It doesn't fluctuate very much. In July, I was towing through West Virginia with the cruise set at 65 in the mountains and trans temp was still at 200* or a little lower.
Mach8274 is correct; unlike many previous transmissions these use an oil-to-water cooler as well as a thermostat to ensure that it gets up to temperature. Your tranny temp will stay that hot if you're just empty or pulling 20,000 lbs.
Pulling my current trailer, my '05 trans would reach 215 to 220 on grades. My '11 rarely gets above 200 when pulling grades. I believe this version of the TorqShift is designed to run between 190 and 200 for efficiency reasons.
You'll love your '11 even more when you tow that 5th wheel with it!
Pulling my 18k plus 5er thru the mountains and hills of WY and SD, I regularly see 242-249 degree oil temps. The tranny temps will climb up to around 220. At 240 oil temp, the auxillary fans kick on and sound like your lifting off. I think next summer I am going to try the 15w-40 FOMOCO oil. I currently am using the 10w-30 FOMOCO juice. I have 15,000 miles on my truck and 7,000 with the 5er. None of the fluids smell weird or burnt. Oil changes come every 5000 to 7500 mile. I love towing with this thing.
Congrats on the new truck. I'm picking up my new 2011 F350 dually on Wednesday. Can't wait.
Thanks, and congrats to you too. I'm still putting miles on before my first tow. I'm currently at 380 miles and still have over half a tank of fuel. Pretty amazing.
