Your TorqueShift should have the same range as my 250. When I tow, it rarely gets over 180.
If you're talking about your 2005, then that's wrong. It will get quite a bit above 180F. The newer transmission has a higher temperature thermostat and runs around 195-200F unloaded. It isn't going to run colder than that when towing.
Before I left Ford in 2007 we we discussing raising the normal operating temperature. The materials in the transmission didn't care, and the newer fluids didn't care, but the efficiency of the transmission cared in a big way. There is quite a bit (no, I don't remember the numbers) of reduction in losses in the transmission as you get hotter. Less losses equals more power to the ground and less fuel burned. So the operating temperature went up.
Thanks for the info Mark. I was running just north of 200 in daily rush hour stop and go commute and was a little concerned. I'm running to Tampa this weekend to pickup TT. I will update with temps running w/o on the way up and towing back down to Ft. Lauderdale.
Replacing the thermostat is not simple. You have to remove the transmission, pull out the converter and the pump, open the pump body, and remove the thermostat. If you're just changing it for the same part, just get one at a Ford dealer. If you mean you want to raise or lower the temperature you'll have to make your own thermostat. I don't know of anyone that makes a different temperature thermostat for a transmission. If you mean use one from a different model transmission, I don't know for certain, but I'd be VERY surprised if one from another model would fit, much less function.
Getting ready to tow a 7K TT. What should the normal trans temp be on a 2015 f250 6.7?
My 2011 6.2 gas runs 185-190°F unloaded once warmed up. Towing will run upper 190's to 205°F most trips. Warmest I have seen was 212°F on one summer trip. However, comparing this to my old 1999 F150 5.4 with 4R70W this truck runs cool. That truck would hit 235° on the same roads and trip runs. On the long trips keeping it close to the 200 mark was a challenge. I hope this provides some insight.
Got my F250 with 6.2 liter last month. Did about a 300 mile round trip watching tranny temp to get a base line to go by when we get a tt. Temp ran between 195 to 205.

But from an oil point of view, the hotter the oil the quicker it will break down. But I do not think 200F is close enough to worry about the oil breaking down.
You know, we actually knew about oil breaking down with heat. Imagine that, at Ford we had data on the oil in the transmission. Testing showed that at these higher temperatures the oil could still last in excess of 100,000 miles.
