so i FINALLY got my truck running good after 2 months and about 1500 dollars in new parts i was able to drive it today got to the gas station shut it off came back out nothin just would crank and the starter cylinoid would just smoke and get real hot. i had this problem with my original 300 6 but when i swapped to a 302 out of a 77 f150 i got a cylinoid from a 86f150 so at the gas station i let the truck cool down and it finally started please help and the truck is an 86 f150 4x4
Smoking is a sign of a loose/poor/ undersized connection. But it was cranking correct? If you keep cranking without letting it rest, you will start seeing wires and the starter getting hot. You can actually ruin the starter by cranking it for too long. Crank it in short 5 second bursts, do about 3 or 4 of them, and then if it won't start let it sit for a minute for the starter to cool off before trying again.
If it was cranking but not firing off, you obivously have a fuel problem or a spark problem. You need to check which when it won't start again.
the starter was cranking but it was a slow crank and truck was getting fuel and spark the wire from the battery to the cylinoid is the one that was getting so hot it was smoking
I don't know for certain but my guess is the engine block although it likely shouldn't matter assuming the connection between the two (block & housing) is good & solid.
The v8's ground was bolted to the front passenger corner of the engine. But it doesn't matter so long as you have a clean connection. If the connection to the ground was not good, it would be smoking. You need to look at the smoking wire and it's connections.
the last time it let me sit it would crank slowly at first give it a rest and it would fire rate up it would only do it after the truck was warmed up so i got out and just checked the wire at the starter and found out my truck has a rear main seal leak and when i would drive it it would soak the starter and starter wire in oil,as soon as i would clean it off bam would start no problem thanks for all the help feels so good to have a running truck agian
