I have a bad transmission in my 1996 E350
Everyone Ive talked to says a 96 has to be replaced with another 96
Does anyone have any idea if this is true?
I have a possiblity of getting a 97 transmission dont want to miss it if it will work
Look at the pans-if they are the same, it will work. With so many different engine trans options out there, they vary by year chassis type and where it was built. I have a 94 EAOD in my 85 and everyone said it would not work. Works great! Have a 93 F250-351 auto and a 93 E250 351 auto and the transmissions are different...
It would appear that I have both. One has a much larger pan on it than the other two. Two with the same pan, one is stamped METRIC the other is not, but the pans are the same size and shape. The other has a much larger pan different shape. All are 4spd auto. So without crawling under the truck to check the tags you tell me. I would suppose two are AODE and the other E4OD. But I still think that there are more than two Ford 4spd Autos out there. The two like units I have have adjustable kick down type rods the other is cable operated. By the way one in the 85 is on a carbed engine, which they all said would not work either, the other is on fuel injection.

Those are all AOD transmissions. Neither the AODE nor the E4OD has either a cable or kick down rod. Some AODs had cables and some had rods, it depended on the year and the application.
So what you were saying above about making them work was true back in the days before electronic transmissions. Your transmissions are non-electronic. The only electronics on those transmissions are the neutral start switch and the backup light switch.
Both the AODE and the E4OD are electronic, which makes swapping them between vehicles MUCH harder. The electronics must be compatible or they won't shift.
